Charles King was born in London on 25 September 1788. His father was a barge builder at Ratcliff on the Thames. Charles became a lighterman on the Thames after an apprenticeship. On 15 January 1812 he and Thomas Culiver were sentenced to death at the Old Bailey for the theft of a barge of deals on the Thames. Their sentences were respited on the condition that they be transported and they were both placed on the hulk Zealand. King was then placed on board the Fortune which arrived in Sydney on 7 June 1813 and was assigned as a Government boatman. He received a conditional pardon on 3 January 1818 on the recommendation of Captain Piper the collector of customs. Culiver was transported to Tasmania.
