Managers of Patriot Josiah (Joshua) Lewis,

I am contacting you about this profile: https://www.geni.com/people/Patriot-Josiah-Joshua-Lewis/60000000854.... After reviewing this person's records, William Lewis circa 1745 who married Sarah Burton cannot be the son of Patriot Josiah (Joshua) Lewis because his birthdate is before that of Josiah the Patriot. Therefore, it seems that another Josiah could be this William's father or an entirely different Lewis. Another possibility could be that Josiah Lewis 1728-1820 & father of Patriot Josiah Lewis could be the brother of William Lewis who married Sarah Burton. I would greatly appreciate your help in rectifying this problem and request your help in searching for who would more likely be this William's father. After looking further at this website, I am now postulating that William Lewis II born 1709 could be the father of William that married Sarah. Apparently, the biggest issue is that there are an enormous amount of men in my tree who are named William Lewis including my nephew, great grandfather, great great grandfather, and so on.

Sincerely,

Andria Lewis Entrekin

FYI: I am new to Geni, but I have done extensive research on ancestry.

Patriot Josiah (Joshua) Lewis

After some review of past merges, several profiles were unmerged including these:

It merged the Rogers into Hill for one of the Mary wives and doesn't seem to be a match.

This merge was also reversed:

Now we need to sort the profiles to determine if there is a wrong connection. I tend to think that perhaps given the dates, Andria's idea of William being a brother to an elder Josiah, may be correct.

The Lewis Families of Northeastern South Carolina and Southeastern North Carolina by J. D. Lewis:

The Descendents of William Lewis, Jr. and ? of Bath County, NC
This William Lewis arrived as a young lad with his parents in what is present-day Town Creek, Brunswick County, NC in the 1720s - apparently from the Bertie, NC area where he allegedly grew up.

All three of his sons moved inland to Bladen County in the 1750s. Samuel and William then went on the Duplin County in the late 1750s/early 1760s - what is now Sampson County.

Josiah Lewis was born 2/17/1728, in Bath County, NC (present day Brunswick County), and died 6/11/1820 in Bladen County, North Carolina. His wife, Lucy Ann Mullington, was born 4/5/1734 in Brunswick Town, (present day Brunswick County), and she died in Bladen County on 6/11/1775. Josiah and Ann were married 12/23/1750.

In the 1750s, Josiah and Ann moved to Bladen County, North Carolina and settled for the remainder of their lives. All eleven of their children were born in Bladen County, North Carolina, as shown below.

Josiah Lewis was elected to the Senate Commons as a representative of Bladen County on 9/7/1791. He represented Bladen County in the NC House of Commons at New Bern in 1792-1793, at Fayetteville in 1794-1795, and in the Senate Assemblies at Raleigh 1795-1800. Josiah Lewis was also the Sheriff of Bladen County from roughly 1803 to 1812.

This William Lewis was born in what is present-day Town Creek, Brunswick County, NC circa 1732 - at that time, this was considered part of New Hanover County.

He apparently followed his older brother, Josiah Lewis, to Bladen County, NC because he shows up in many of the early land transactions of the 1750s and 1760s.

Furthermore, this William Lewis subsequently followed his other brother, Samuel Lewis, to Duplin County, NC, in the early 1760s, where he began his family. Where he ultimately ended up is still a mystery.

The following sons are "highly educated guesses" only. If anyone has better information, please contact me at the address shown below, or the e-mail address provided on the home page herein.

Children* Date Born Date Died Date Married Who Married
*William Lewis c.1755. 1843. ? Lucy?
*George Lewis 1764. 6/8/1844. c.1792. Nancy ?
*James Lewis c.1768. ? ? ?
*Jordan Lewis c.1770 1838. 1st - c. 1789. 2nd - ? Unknown Sarah ?
*Isaac Lewis c.1774. ? ? ?

*Most likely born in Duplin County, NC (what is now Sampson County). Possibly born in Bladen County, NC.

Sons William, James, and Jordan can be found in Bulloch County, GA during 1796, along with other cousins - all petitioning the State of Georgia to establish the new county in 1795. Evidence supports that they were brothers. Other evidence suggests both were sons of this William Lewis.

I think that this William Lewis is the brother of Josiah Lewis the Patriot, not his son.

Private User and Marsha Gail Kamish do you concur?

William was not born in Wales, either. I am not sure where that comes from. Maybe another William further back.

Susanne,

Thanks for your quick reply and assistance.

I think that we need to check another line of William Lewis I here.

Please assist. These are not the same lines, I don't think but are both of Eastern Carolina. Families probably intermarried.

Writings of Lewis Historian of the Carolina branch J D Lewis needs to be consulted for more thorough examination. These all tie together and should not be merged as they appear to me to be a lot of separate William profiles. It may take bringing out the chart paper to sort it. "This is not a branch of the Warner Hall Lewis Family of Virginia."

This is terribly important as it impacts Native lines in the region. Some Lewis members married into various lines of Waccamaw and Old Cheraw. I would like to see it straight, but it will take time. I will start adding info as I can and see where it goes.
Private User I am sending you a collaboration request.

Sounds like a step in the right direction. I will accept collaboration request.

I am not a researcher so I will bow to all y'all's (I've lived in Texas too long) expertise. Whatever y'all decide, let me know and i'll make it so!

We have it under control, Marsha Gail Kamish and will keep you posted. It will just take a lot of processing. I think there are a lot of profiles that may need sorting, connecting, splicing, and reconnecting to get this right, but we will.

You're a warrior Susanne Floyd!!!
