This is a place to sort the issues with the Lewis families of Southeastern North Carolina and Southeastern South Carolina. A project will be established for profiles also to help manage and maintain their integrity as so many have similar names.

From https://www.senclewises.com/earliestlewises.html

Lewis Family Genealogist J. D. Lewis notes in his extensive work that there are FIVE "KEY" LEWIS FAMILIES in "my neck of the woods."

""My Neck of the Woods" includes Bladen, Brunswick, Columbus, Cumberland, Duplin, New Hanover, Pender, Robeson, and Sampson Counties in North Carolina; plus Darlington, Dillon, Florence, Georgetown, Horry, and Marion Counties in South Carolina.

In this area, FIVE KEY Lewis Families settled in the 1700s, as described below. In the 1800s, other Lewis Families arrived in Our Area, and these later families are identified in the appropriate counties linked from the Home Page."

Four of the five families have progenitors named William.

William Lewis - This William Lewis [Key Lewis Family #1] was born circa 1690 in "upper NC" area of Bertie and Chowan Counties. He moved his family to "lower NC" circa 1727, arriving in Town Creek - present-day Brunswick County. William Lewis died in Brunswick County in 1731. His two sons, William Jr. and Solomon moved on south to what is present day Horry County, SC in the mid- to late-1730s, and their sons moved into Marion County, SC and Bladen County, NC. This KEY LEWIS FAMILY is represented in all timelines herein with a lavender color.

William Lewis, Jr. - Born in Northern Ireland c.1690, this William Lewis, Jr. (of another Lewis lineage) [Key Lewis Family #2] brought his family to the Black River area just north of New Hanover County, NC in 1736. His descendents spread out all over our region, settling in Bladen County, Columbus County, Brunswick County, New Hanover County, Pender County, Robeson County, Cumberland County, Duplin County, and Sampson County, NC. Some settled in Marion County, SC. This KEY LEWIS FAMILY is represented in all timelines herein with a red color.

Charles Lewis, Jrs. - Charles Lewis, Jr. [Key Lewis Family #3] is the grandson of Robert Lewis and Mary Biggerstaffe of Charleston, SC - two of the earliest Lewises to arrive in SC in 1675. Charles Lewis, Jr. and wife Martha Morrall had three daughters and two sons, all who remained in what is present-day Horry County. Later descendents moved "south and west" as was common in the early 1800s. This KEY LEWIS FAMILY is represented in all timelines herein with a dark blue color.

William Lewis - This William Lewis [Key Lewis Family #4] married Mourning Van Pelt and settled in Horry County, SC. This William Lewis is the son of yet another William Lewis of Bertie County, NC - the father William being a nephew of the first William Lewis listed above. Yeah, it gets confusing, doesn't it? Many of this William Lewis's descendents moved back and forth between Horry County and Marion County, with some moving on "south and west." This KEY LEWIS FAMILY is represented in all timelines herein with a green color.

William Lewis - This William Lewis, from yet another lineage [Key Lewis Family #5], was born in Charlottesville, VA circa 1750. He arrived in New Hanover County, NC in 1780 with his family. Very little is known about this family, but everything available to the Author is in this website. This KEY LEWIS FAMILY is represented in all timelines herein with a yellow color.

I cannot show color on here, so we may have to refer to William Lav, William Red, William Green, and William Yel. or something like that if it gets to be an issue. At first glance, I know that my family is connected to William (Green) as one of his descendants married my 4th great aunt, Nancy Ann Floyd.
I suspect that my ancestor Patience Harrelson is a member of one of these Lewis families and I probably have another Lewis ancestor through one of the "Unknown wife of...." or MNU profiles. It makes me NEED to research this, though it will be slow.

Please add additional info, questions, etc. I will try to post what I am doing as I work through these lines here.

Profiles to consider and review:

William Lewis, I

William Lewis I

William Lewis, Jr

Those are just the ones I found in a cursory search.

This William Lewis, I needs parents clarified. No source for the ones Richard and Elizabeth attached to him, but J.D. Lewis suggests others.

Need to determine which set of parents for William Lewis, I

I can't find anything except sources for Capt. Edward Lewis and Bridgett Browne being parents. The wikitree source for Richard Lewis, of Rowan County and Elizabeth Lewis is not very fleshed out and with spurious connections that have a note as being disconnected.

Stephen Daniel Harper and Erica Howton, can you advise? I am just about ready to tag a few profiles in this group as complete.

I'm sorry, but it looks like I won't be able to shed any additional light on who the parents of William Lewis, I might have been. I have not done any original research on him (even though he's my 7th great grandfather!) and the secondary sources I have in my file don't add anything new beyond what has already been cited in this discussion thread. If the stated birth dates for William (1680) and Edward (1667) are correct, it seems Edward would have been a bit too young to be William's father. I'll see what else I can find, but I suspect that sorting this out would require digging deep into very old land and estate records for the area that William came from.

Following up on my previous note, William Lewis, I is also said to have been born in 1690, rather than 1690. If the later birth date is correct, then he certainly could have been Edward's son. I wonder if anyone has tried using DNA to sort out the Lewis family trees.

Stephen Daniel Harper, thanks and yes, I saw a 1680 and a 1690 dates. I can adjust that later this evening for sure as I agree, it seems possible.

I just sent you and email on this profile Elizabeth McQueen Is it possible that she is the daughter of Joel B. Skipper, after all instead of Josiah? I can't find anything on her. They lived in the same vicinity. Elizabeth Caroline McQueen That would change the father of her husband Daniel McQueen, but how certain are we of that? Thanks so much for your help with this.

Sorry, I can't help you much with Elizabeth McQueen either. I guess this is a branch of my tree that I need to research further.

I'm going to do some digging and report back. :-)

The following notes appear in the profile for William Lewis, I in a Family Search family tree:

"William Lewis of Bath was the son of Richard Lewis and his wife Elizabeth of Chowan, NC. ( from the Will of William dated 21 July1719) sons, John, Benjamin, William, dau Jean Hudson.
This William Lewis of Bath County, NC is the earliest recorded William Lewis in North Carolina. William Lewis was born c.1690 in what is present-day Bertie County, NC. In the 1720s, William and his wife Mary moved to Town Creek, an early settlement in New Hanover County (present-day Brunswick County). William died in Brunswick County on 12/11/1731. Soon thereafter, his two sons moved south to what is present-day Horry County, SC, where it seems that William Jr. remained and Solomon moved on to what is present-day Marion County, SC. Not much is known about William and Mary Lewis's daughters."

Unfortunately, I've not been able to locate a copy of William's 1719 will that reportedly confirms the names of his parents.

Disconnected Richard Lewis, of Rowan County As son of Thomas Griffin Lewis, Sr. {Fictional} & locked relationships.

There’s a note he was born in Prince George, MD which I think could be disregarded. Maryland is reasonably source-able and there’s nothing similar to him at Mike Marshalls database:

https://www.colonial-settlers-md-va.us/search.php?myfirstname=Richa...

Not sure If this helps your current study, but I’m almost done with a cleanup of Thomas Lewis, of Battersea

Added these disambiguating notes to that profile:

Disambiguation

Several persons named Thomas Lewis lived at the same time. This will serve to distinguish them: See also: < Flawed Welsh Ancestry of Maryland Lewis Family >

  • 1630: Thomas Lewis of Isle of Wight, was born Isle of Wight, Virginia 1630 or Oswestry in Shropshire, England. He was son of a John Lewis born Oswestry Nov 26 1611. He married Rebecca George, born 1638, Castle Creek, Isle of Wight. Thomas died in Isle of Wight County. No children shown. In the 1600's, there was much traffic between Isle of Wight County, Virginia, and colonial Maryland. Proposed Destination Profile: Thomas of Isle of Wight.
  • 1652: Thomas Griffin Lewis-1312 was a legendary figure whose biography is comprised of bits and pieces of others' lives. He was said to have been born in Lancaster, Va 1652, and was formerly shown as the son of Richard Lewis of Virginia and his wife Francys Miles. Richard and Francys have only two documented sons, Richard and Miles Lewis and other children shown on their profile, including Thomas, are being delinked. Legend has him married to the legendary Mary Catherine Blyzzard.
  • 1659: Thomas Lewis, Jr of Putney, b. Charles Co 1659. He married Rebecca Timothy, born Charles County 1685, and through her family was associated with the Putney property. • 1662 Thomas Lewis of Battersea. Also known as Thomas Luees, born 1662, indentured Servant of Richard Edelen, shown as marrying Catherine, daughter of Richard Edelen and as being Thomas Lewis of Battersea. The 1696 will is his. Children shown include those listed in will of Thomas of Battersea, but birthdates shown for children are a whole generation earlier. Researched and Documented. Children shown: Richard, b. Charles 1686, John, b. PGC 1690, Thomas, b. Charles 1692. Also includes Children names = Richard Thomas John David MaryAnn and Margaret, born 1657-1666. This is the Thomas Lewis who (1) married a woman named Catherine, (2) owned property called Battersea, and (3) died in 1696, leaving a will and naming children. This Thomas's widow Catherine (4) married John Watkins, who raised the Lewis children and (5) named them in his own will.

Thanks, Erica Howton and thanks for the "Disambiguation" model. I think I will be doing some of these for the bunch. I will check it out the notes above.

Love the title "Flawed Welsh Ancestry." Some days, I think I live that life. :-)

Good heavens! I am not even sure chart paper could map out your Thomas Lewis of Battersea. Glad that is straight.

Found a will for Daniel McQueen, Sr. and land plats surveyed for him by Josiah Lewis, Jr. Stephen Daniel Harper. Will post on his profile and see what else appears.

I just received my hardcopy of J. D. Lewis's book "My Neck of the Woods" complete with CD rom if I can find something to play it on.

Going through in a cursory glance, it may be the finest history that I have seen of a family - actually 5 Lewis lines. The text is filled with a variety of maps that make it easy to understand the landscape of North and South Carolina. It is worth a lot to me for study of other families of the region to have those at my fingertips.

I will do what I can with it as it has much more than I thought possible. A very good read it will be.

I crave good maps.

Erica Howton, me too! I can look up what a county is located in back in 1720, but with a map in print, I don't have to fumble for it.

J. D. Lewis has a great rationale for his methodology. He is notating strictly Lewis lines, meaning mostly male lines, but mentions if there is a married name or if a female Lewis married someone. It is a straightforward study of the Y-lines for the most part as he didn't want to get "distracted." After working on here and bird-walking every chance I get onto a collateral line, I can understand it.

See Below.....JD Lewis Information regarding Thomas Griffith Lewis

The Descendents of Thomas [Griffith] Lewis and Elizabeth Ann Wood
This Thomas Lewis was born c.1640 in Peterschurch, Herefordshire, England. He and Elizabeth Ann Wood were married c. 1659 in the same place as his birth. One source asserts he died in 1686.

Updates provided in July of 2013 by Lynda Frisch, a descendent.
In August of 2018, Mr. John Lewis of Santa Fe, NM provided an update that he found that this family never left England per records he found in Cheshunt, Hertfordshire, England. So... use this info as you deem appropriate.

Carlisle E. Lewis I sent you and invitation to the Lewis Project. We will get this all straight one day. :-)

Thanks Susanne, been on this for some time, normally JD Lewis information proves to be a very good source.

Carlisle, do we need to see if we should detach Thomas Lewis, of Cheshunt and Elizabeth Ann Lewis or cut off at Capt. Edward Lewis and his wife Bridgett Browne ? I think we may need to see if NC archives have anything on Edward and Bridget.

Biography
Work in progress - older links no longer available. Early records not verified. Edward was born in 1666. Or 1670.

Some of the specifics about Edwards ancestors are not confirmed. As a work in progress, it is included here. Edward was born in Hertfordshire in 1666. He immigrated to Virginia around 1691. He made his way into Chowan Precinct , North Carolina soon thereafter. His wife was named Bridgett ___________.

Whether his wife was the same Bridgett Lewis that married John Brown is conjecture. In fact, even the listed children may well be.

Edward met an untimely death around the year 1704. Or he died in 1712.

His widow remarried to John Browne, Sr. by 1706.

Wiki notes that the parents of Edward are not known and the above information is speculative.

I would say that we might cut "Capt. Edward Lewis" from his parents. It appears as though an Edward and Bridgett might be father of the Lewis boys, but that parents are not known of Edward Lewis. Seeking more.

Carlisle, do you know where I can find this update you posted? Is it on the internet somewhere?

"In August of 2018, Mr. John Lewis of Santa Fe, NM provided an update that he found that this family never left England per records he found in Cheshunt, Hertfordshire, England. So... use this info as you deem appropriate."

I'd like to see if I can find his source or link the source and make sure we don't need to do something else. It may be that we need NN Lewis and wife of NN Lewis as parents of the brothers.

Susanna, concur with detaching Thomas Lewis, of Cheshunt and Elizabeth Ann Lewis, however, keep Capt. Edward Lewis and his wife Bridgett Browne attached to John Lewis, Major 1633-1689.

Your thoughts?

Yes, I agree at this point. Thanks Carlisle.

Susanne, you may have this - Reference JD Lewis - Thomas & Edward

The earliest record I can find of a Lewis
living in what is present-day North Carolina is
for a Thomas Lewis living in the Albemarle
region in 1664. Over the past century, many
folks have researched this Thomas Lewis, and
there about as many “solutions” with respect
to his ancestry (as well as his true
descendents) as there are grains of sand on the
beach. Some folks are convinced that this
Thomas Lewis came from Maryland. Others
are convinced that he came from a well established Lewis family of Jamestown.
Based on my own independent research of
this man, I am convinced that he came to the
New World with the primary intent of settling
in North Carolina – Albemarle County,
specifically – which is where he ended up. It
is most likely that this Thomas Lewis did
travel to Jamestown, but this was merely his
“port of arrival” and not his ultimate
destination.
Thomas Lewis was born circa 1640 in
Peterschurch, Herefordshire, England.
Around 1659, he married Ann (last name
unknown) in the same town in which he was
born, but they soon moved over to Chesthunt,
a nearby town in Herefordshire. Thomas and
Ann had two sons in Chesthunt: James, born
in 1660 (died two years later); and John, born
in 1663. In 1664, Thomas and Ann (with
baby John) came to Jamestown, but
immediately traveled down to Albemarle,
North Carolina where they settled for the
remainder of their lives.
Thomas and Ann had three more known
sons, but I have not been lucky enough to find
out if they had any daughters or not. Edward
was born in 1667, Thomas was born in 1670,
and Samuell was born in 1674 – all in
Albemarle County, North Carolina, in what is
present-day Chowan County.
Well, there surely could have been an
earlier Lewis to permanently settle in North
Carolina, but I have not been able to “dig” one
out so far. It is entirely possible that there was
a Lewis among the 800 or so early settlers of
the first Charles Town in the Cape Fear
region, but I have never been able to find a list
of those settlers. But, this was also not a
permanent settlement, so perhaps Thomas is
the “first.”
If anyone has any information on these
early settlers of the first Charles Town, or on
an earlier “permanent” Lewis settler in North
Carolina – other than Thomas and Ann –
please forward your information to me and I’ll
gladly update my databases as well as the next
version of this book.
Since I have long ago given up on trying
to sort out every Lewis family in the state of
North Carolina, I do not have a lot more
information on any Lewis families other than
my “specific area” of interest. In the
meantime, I offer the following maps to
possibly help any of you who are just starting
in your family research in this state

Yes, and that is the crux of the problem. Is Capt. Edward Lewis, the son of Thomas and Ann? What are we going to decide, Carlisle? J. D. thinks they are, but a later person says that Thomas and Ann never left England.

I would like to see the source on that vs. what J. D. has found. Would help us make a determination, I think. Course, it may be a different Thomas and Ann who stayed in England. The names were common for the time.
