Honestly it is difficult to determine spelling of last name. It apparently has been misspelled so many times that both ways have become accepted, making it more difficult to trace the tree. John and Anne headstones have "Messinger", while right adjacent is son Matthew Lyon's, which is spelled "Messenger". It is worth considering if an alternative exists to add other spelling to this family as "also known as" or nickname.
