A Rivallon, Count of Poher (Riuuallon, commes Poucaer) is a witness to a charter issued by Nominoe, dated to 8 March, sometime between 839 and 844.[1]

A later edition of the Cartulaire de Redon dates the charter to 850.[2]

A charter dated to 10 March 857[3] or 851-855[2] names a witness Salomon (later Duke of Brittany) as a son of Rivallon (Salomon filii Rivallon) and although this Rivallon is not named as Count of Poher, Pettiau indicates that they are the same person.

Wife and child
The name and parentage of his wife is unknown. Charles Cawley,[4] doesn't name Rivallon as the father of Salomon, but does suggest that Salomon's mother could be a sister of Nominoë based on a charter issued by his son Erispoë which mentions the consent of his cousin Salomon (consensu consobrini mei Salmonis)[5].

However the latin term consobrinus which does mean cousin, doesn't necessarily mean first cousin and there could be other ways Erispoe and Salomon could be related.

Disputed child
It's not clear why Marmoec or Marmohec is the daughter of Rivallon, and this isn't mentioned in any primary sources.

Research Notes
If he did die about 7 May 857 (which seems to be unsourced) then it seems highly unlikely he would be born as early as 778, given life expectancy in the ninth century. Even if the date he died is changed to after 8 March 850, 778 as his birth year still seems unlikely.

Rhiwallon I de Poher is my 38th great grandfather.
