John Stuart Talbot, Snr. SV/PROG

See also John Stuart Talbot, Esq.

These 2 John Stuart Talbot's appear to be the same person since they both have the same date of death 20/10/1953, and also both have a child Henry Talbot (1812-1895).

The problem is that they have different dates of birth and different parents.

Sophia B Born March 1, 1817, Christened March 16, 1817 St. George Hanover Square London. Married December 30 1836 Charles Robinson. Died December 3 1901

And astonishingly, other records have his birth date as April 6 1773, Westminster, London, England, illegitimate son of King George the third, and his burial October 20, 1853, Old cemetery, Methodist section, Grahamstown, South Africa.

Married, Priscilla (Pursell) Talbot and together had six children. She was born October, 3, 1774 Westminster Middlesex England. Died, January, 11, 1822 on the voyage to South Africa, Grahamstown, Cape of Good Hope, South Africa.

Migrated to South Africa with the "Settlers of 1820's" from England. Joined the Sephton party on board the "Brilliant". His wife and children sailed on the "Aurora". He was a Master Mariner and had a quarrel with the captain of the "Aurora" and had to sail on the "Brilliant".

Married Ann (Reese) Talbot December, 28, 1823 in Grahamstown, Cape Province, South African, moved to Salem. She was born 1783, London England. Died January 2 1852, South Africa. She was the widow of William Reese. and had also sailed on the "Aurora" as part of the 1820 South African Settlers.

In South Africa he was extremely reluctant to talk about his family. He apparently went into fury when questioned by his children and not give them any answers, he did drop some exciting hints now and then. He indicated one of his forebears was an Earl of Shrewsbury. He also claimed to be directly descended from and connected to the British Royal Family. He would tell his children they were first cousins to Queen Victoria.

There are two separate family legends, for (JST). It was advertised for him to travel to England and claim some estates and titles. No one seemed to know which titles or estates.

The first time was in 1868, Dr. Williamson or Worthington expressed surprise that the South African Talbots had not responded to newspaper advertisements, calling them to travel to England and claim the estates and titles. The second time was in 1875, when Henry James Talbot Jr, remembers a letter to his father, Henry Talbot of Kaysville Utah asking him to travel to London to claim the estates and titles. The family assumed it was the Earl of shrewsbury. Henry rushed to Lewiston Utah, to show it to his son and together they decided not to go. They felt they were too humble to fit into British aristocracy, plus it would also mean leaving the Mormon church.

The legend in South Africa has it, (JST) was a Petty Officer in the British Royal Navy during the Napoleon Wars and fought under Lord Howe in the "Glorious First of June" battle, 1794. Also Teafalgar with Nelson in 1805. Whilst not just missing the possibility that (JST) may have survived in the navy, some legends definitely confuse him with Admiral John Stewart. Yplyme on the Dover, Dorset border.

Another legend, Is he abducted is wife Priscilla from a convent, hence no marriage records.

Finally the most recent "research" (JST) was an illegitimate son of King George the Third. This was supposedly discovered by a lady that had never managed to prove this claim to anyone's satisfaction. Her sources very from memories of some aged aunt, letters and other documents related to the Earl of Shrewsbury, housed in a depository near Westminster Abby but not open to the general public, to diaries, journals and biographies of King George the Third's Chief Advisors. She never names her exact source of quotes and references.
Edited from "Mary Talbot" (Talbot's Research Organization).

John Stuart Talbot supposedly fled to South Africa in fear of his life because his half-brother, King George lV was afraid he would make claim to the throne. Hence the reason he never answered the advertisements. He was afraid it was a trap to laurie him back to England to face imprisonment or worse, execution.

Father of; John Stuart Talbot, Priscilla Sophia Margaret Talbot, Charles Talbot, Amelia Talbot, Henry Talbot (Mormon pioneer and polygamist), Marie (Talbot) Brian.

Children that were baptized at St. Margaret's Westminster London;
Charles-1809, Amelia-1811, Henry-1813, Maria-1814, Sophia-1817.

A Shoemaker, he practiced his profession in both England and South Africa. As well as being a Master Mariner.
