Managers of Colonel Thomas Scott, I,
I am contacting you about this profile: Thomas Scott
Just wanted to explain why Thomas Scott (1676-1765) of St. Olave, Surrey, England, is not my 5th Great Grandfather. Thomas Scott was not born in 1676. Thomas was a member of the Petsworth Parish in Gloucester, Virginia. His name is recorded in the parish’s *vestry book for the first time in December,1714. His name is recorded 12 times throughout the years, serving in numerous capacities. His last appointment in 1767 was to serve as the Collector.
If Thomas had been born in 1676, he would have been 91 years of age in 1767. I find this highly unlikely. The date,1767, also proves that Thomas was still living in Gloucester County, Virginia and not in Caroline County, Virginia. This date also proves that his death was not in 1765, as stated on his profile.
I have spent numerous hours defending Thomas’ profile. People have posted that he was born in Lincolnshire, England and now Olave, England. Some are saying that he was the son of James Scott and Margaret Bennet. Thomas Scott was not the father of Alice Wche, born in 1712, Caroline County, Virginia. Thomas Scott was not the father of William Scott, born in 1756, Caroline County, Virginia.
Apparently, researchers are continuing to co mingle Thomas Scott of Gloucester with another Thomas Scott (most likely a first cousin) of Caroline County, Virginia.
Please remove these incorrect postings from my 5th Great Grandfather, Thomas Scott’s profile.
Sincerely,
Thomas E. Scott
P.S. After researching and combing over 87 Thomas Scotts from Cumberland, England and Scotland, I have solved the mystery of where Thomas was born and how he was referred to as a “Gentleman of wealth”. Thomas was was born in the 1690s (actual date of Christening is known) and arrived in the Virginia Colonies after his father’s death in 1700. I will be posting information later in the year.
