Hello,
I need a clarification as to who can actually edit my family tree. I'm new to GENi and I wanted my now living family members to be able to make suggestions, say HELLO HERE I AM etc. and to be added to my tree. So I set most security attributes to OPEN, PUBLIC. But I did absolutely expect anyone wanting to add or change something to notify me and not just go ahead and "do it". But now I find lots of new profiles of people that I have no knowledge about, and that I can´t verify, added without any personal notification. I can see in the log who has been active and I have sent a message to this person requesting contact. But no response. Is this really possible? I have made restrictions now to my security settings but what should I do in addition? Do I need to delete these profiles in order to force a sensible discussion? Please advice!

If the Profile is Public, anyone on Geni can edit it, no need to speak to you or get your permission.

If the profile is Private but not a Geni User then it can be edited by anyone in its Max Family or the Max Family of a Manager of it.
Max Family is basically back to 3rd great grandparents, out to 4th cousins plus current spouse.

The sort of control you are describing is not only not available on Geni.but is antithetical to the whole point of Geni.

Geni is not a place for personal trees: See https://www.geni.com/worldfamilytree/learn-more

On the other hand, there is nothing wrong with sending a PM, saying basically - we share family, lets talk. Or asking specific questions. Or etc.
Just not "you don't have the right to do anything without my permission" or anything like that.

Also fine - Starting a Public Discussion from a Public Profile asking for the Sources of the information shown on it.

If somebody mucks up relationships or merges profiles that are not the same, you can get help by posting in https://www.geni.com/discussions/257430 only Curators can unmerge profiles, and that Discussion is pretty continuously monitored by Curators who will help.

If somebody accidentally entered 1912 when it clearly should be 2012 or 1812, you can just fix it yourself. If it is not totally obvious, then adding Documentation or information, not just changing the Data is a good idea. And/or starting a Public Discussion from or tagged to the Profile.
