MacKenzie, Alexander, History of the M'Kenzies makes no mention of a Gilbert.
page.472 has the following.

Note carefully the marriage contract vs Gilbert birthdate.

COLIN MACKENZIE, first of Mountgerald, was the second surviving son of Kenneth Mackenzie, VI. of Gairloch, by his third wife, Janet, daughter of John Cuthbert of Castlehill, Inverness. He married, secondly, Katharine, daughter of James Fraser of Achnagairn (marriage contract 1721), with issue - 1. James, his heir and successor. 2. Alexander, who died, without issue, in 1725. 3. I have read the Alexander MacKenzie account and agree that there is no mention of Gilbert as being son of Colin, 1st of Mountgerald.
I would cite though that there is mention of Gilbert MacKenzie as son of Colin, on 112 public family trees as registered on ancestry.com; many to include 0-25 sources for their listing. Many of those sources cite, "unknown" mother. It would be great if some of those family trees listing Gilbert on ancestry.com could add to the thread.

I should hasten to add that drilling down on the 0-25 sources for the Gilbert listing did not yield any reliable results of lineage.

Public trees on Ancestry Trees are not the most reliable.

You'll find 100+ trees with the fake profile for a Alexander Mackenzie (or John Alexander Mackenzie) 4th of Davoch (d.1766) fake son of Kenneth Mackenzie 4th of Seaforth.

I do not currently have paid access to Ancestry so I can no longer view anything.

The death date for Catherine Fraser that I just added can be found on FindMyPast in the newspaper section. If Gilbert listed birth year of 1685 is correct, she is not his mother.

The issue of connecting Gilbert MacKenzie as son of Colin MacKenzie as married to Catherine Fraser is a problem as you say. I've exhausted about all the resources I have and have dome up empty. Is there a way that you know of to ask specifically who is the father of Gilbert MacKenzie?

There is no birth record for Gilbert himself. I haven't look up a marriage record, if one exists it he is a son from a family of importance it may include his father name and land connection. Gilbert is uncommon name.

If you have all his children, there is a potential but not concrete look at his family. First son having his fathers name. If you have parish record for the births of his children it may include a witness or 2. A lot of assuming here, but it "could" be immediate family. Father. Brother.

I'll follow your good leads. I will also be in Scotland at end of May and may check in Edinburgh resources. Thx.
