Based on “The Lewis Family of Hunting Creek, Accomack County, Virginia: John Lewis and one line of descendants.” Compiled by Mary Frances Carey. (1981). < PDF >

The exact date of John’s death was not found. When the will [written 15 August 1690] was presented to the Court, one witness was deceased and another was out of the colony so the probate was postponed. The untimely death of his son John caused the family to petition the court to probate the will without further delay, as shown by the following entry:

At a Court held for Accomack County on 9 December 1697, Robert and Richard Lewis, only surviving sons and children of John Lewis, and Elizabeth Lewis, widow of John, Jr., deceased, do agree that the will of John Lewis, Sr., decreased, shall be in force.

This entry indicates that Lucresia had died before December 1697. No heirs were found for Richard but Robert had two daughters. Thus, the only two males in the third generation were William and John, grandsons of John who patented the land.

The children of John Lewis were:

  1. John, 1658-1697 married Elizabeth Rudolphus (John Lewis (II) of Hunting Creek)
  2. Robert married ? (Robert Lewis)
  3. Richard (Richard Lewis, of Hunting Creek)
  4. Mary (Mary Groten)
