There are a lot of trees based on the NOVEL Bedford Village, as embellished by people who have made assumptions and added even more errors t trees and databases. There was a Real Garrett/Garriott/Gerard Pendergrass (described variously as addicted to drink, a good woodsman, and a real rogue) who lived and had a trading post/tavern in Raystown, later Bedford, Pennsylvania and it is known that earlier in Virginia he had a large family, BUT, the names of his children and wife in the novel are FICTION (Matthew, Mark Luke and John, and a wife named Rose, and the internet has erroneously added the maiden name Baker or Barker.) In actuality, Garrett's Sr's wife's name was ANNE Unknown, as we know from the Petition she filed about their land, and their only IDENTIFIED children, though we know there were more, were Garrett Jr (killed by Indians in Ky in 1777 at Ft Harrod), Jesse, and Gertrude,( killed ny Indians in Pennsylvana about 1757). Because the NOVEL called the sons Biblical names, the assumption by those who didn't do research, was that the (real) Luke Prendergast who married in Baltimore and moved to North Carolina "must have been" a son of Garrett and Anne (not Rose) and ONLY because the real Luke had a son named John Baker Prendergast, online folks have assigned this as Anne's maiden name. However, YDNA testing of a Garrett descendant with a solid traditional paper trail did NOT match a descendant of Luke with a solid traditional paper trail, the latter likleier to be accurate because it matched other men in the Pendergraft YDNA project. I don't suggest reading the novel Bedford Village, as it is extremely tedious and depressing, but I emphaisize that it is a NOVEL and not intended to be historically accurate. There are, however, a fair number of REAL documents about the colorful Garrett, who sold land to Geo Washingotn's brother Lawrence in Viirginis and was sued, paid taxes, and was accused of having forcibly taken over a hospitable neighbor's cabin by threatening to split out his brains with an ax. I don't know who decided his parents were Edward Pendergrass and Elizabeth, but the only Edward of the time frame,to MY knowledge was down in Middlesex County, Virginia born somewhere in 1688 and indentured to a Lohe, married Eliz Hickey n 1711, but I don't know why anyone would think they were Garrett's parents . I await enlightenment on that if anyone has any info. Also, I don't know if there is a source for Garrett's birth year or place - I've never seen one, so I'd appreciate that info if anyone has a real source.. I am always happy to share my DOCUMENTED research with anyone who is interested and I can be reached at kbrandon@cfl.rr.com. Just remind me where you saw my name, because I get a lot of queiries from a lot of websites, especially Ancestry.Happy Hunting karen marcum pendergrass brandon
