This youngest of the Kootsillas children of record was called Constant, then Casimir and Casmir, nicknamed "Cassie" later as an adult. Only deep in his adult life did Cassie OFFICIALLY change his name to Charles Carmen, and end up divorced, apparently childless, and living alone in a Rouge area of Detroit with other truck drivers. At one time Cassie bragged he was an associate of some sport with reputed Teamster union president Jimmy Hoffa. That relationship was never explained but Carmen in a late in life Census described his occupation as a truck dricver and hoffa represented the Truckers in Detroit. Was he a union activist member? We descendants don't know.
Interesting abt the St Casimir Cemetery near Pittston PA, just 40 miles from Shenandoah PA. We have our Cucules/Kootsillas family passing thru that area in the 1890s after immigrating to America from Lithuania. Thomas Cucules (Americanized phonetically to "Kootsillas") and wife Magdalena Navickas had immigrated from Lithuania in abt 1886 according to one Census, the most logical
.
They had four children in the Shenandoah area of Pennsylvania's coal country before leaving for another coal mining community area in Bureau Co, Illinois, about 100 miles west of Chicago. They had four children there; the first Thomas John b 1898, then Frank and Tony and finally Constant likely in possibly early 1906. This name appeared for the lad listed in his first census, age 4 in 1910 in Illinois (Do you supposed that was short for "Constantine"?) On the next census, 1920, and afterwards, the alleged last child born for them in Illinois was marked as 18 (though should have been 14) and named Casmir, Casimir, or later, just plain "Cassie". (We don't really know his exact age, because 10 yrs after that in 1930 he was listed as age 27). Do you suppose the family just decided to call him something else they picked up when they were in Pennsylvania, like "Casmir?" Without a birth certificate, who would know otherwise?
In any case, the family named after these immigrants would be very interested in any markers with the name Cucules, Kuculis, or Kootsillas, since the 1890 national Census was virtually destroyed in a Commerce Department fire.
