My name is Scott Mandel. My 3rd great grandfather was Moses Arnsdorff. Moses Arnsdorff We believe he was born in the Mecklenburg area around 1790. He had 4 children and died young in 1830, possibly in Mesguth. We believe his father's name was Leibe. I believe it is possible that Sophie/Jette was a sister to Moses. With a Arnsdorff cousin, we have been able to figure out at least 3 of us having DNA from Moses Arnsdorff that matches David Taft's DNA on ancestry. David is a descendent of Sophie/Jette. Does anyone else know of any of Sophie/Jette's descendants having a DNA test? Any known biographies? Of Moses's children, Israel Arnsdorff raised his children in Zinten, East Prussia. Joseph and Chana raised most of their children in what is now Vištytis, Lithuania (in the 1800s was part of East Prussia). On her husbands geni profile there is a reference to a book: "Schutzjuden in Mecklenburg- Schwerin". Does anyone have it or know if there are other Arnsdorff's mentioned in the book? One other note, though it does not really prove anything is that both Israel and Joseph each named one of their daughters in the 1850s the name of Henriette, which is probably where the name Jette is from. It is possible that this name is just a popular German first name for the time period, and maybe not named after a family member that had recently passed. Thank you in advance for any additional information you can provide. Scott Mandel

My great grandmother was Henriette, also known as Jettchen. I was told that Jettchen or Jette often can be a pet name for Henriette in East Prussia/Germany times. Her mother was Masi Arnsdorf, but possibly could be two f's in her name. I could never learn her parents names in 6 years that i have been researching this because i am told that WW2 destroyed a lot of records. It is possible that Moses could have been the father or grandfather. My branch of family moved to Seckenburg, East Prussia from Vistytis, Lithuania area. I am interested to know how far Zinten was to Seckenburg. Heidi Dodge

Seckenburg to Zinten (both now in the Russian Kaliningrad Oblast) via google maps is about 160km. Seckenburg is north of Koenigsburg and Zinten is south of Koenigsburg.

I made an error in my previous post. I do have Masi Arnsdorf's father listed as Markus Arnsdorf and mother listed as Esther Gutter. I am not sure Markus is also Moses but I would doubt it ? Usually Morris / Moshe / Moses etc are what people go by. So i am thinking that Moses was a brother of Markus ? Perhaps ? Markus was born in the Vistytis area as well. So if Leibe Arnsdorff was the father of Moses, it could stand to reason that he was also the father of Markus. Markus was born around 1810. Maybe earlier.

Thank you for the map information. My ancestors spent time in Koenigsburg. I have a DNA match to David Taft with Sophie Arnsdorf so where do we go from here on trying to figure out our ancestry ? I have been trying to expand the Arnsdorf family and I read that Arnsdorf is a rare surname in Germany. Not sure about Lithuania.

My grandmother had a male relative of Arnsdorf living in Berlin around 1930's. I was unable to find his first name but i have his address. I thought he might be the brother of Masi Arnsdorf. I wish I had a chance to talk to my grandfather but he died when I was 1 year old. He put down Lapidas up the Arnsdorf tree so there is a connection to that family as well. Do you have any Lapidas or Lapidus matches ?

Dear Scott, I apologize for my late answer.
I cannot help with DNA-testing, for the Arnsdorf/Loewenhaupt is not directly related.
As to the Jews of Mecklenburg:
Try this website: http://www.juden-in-mecklenburg.de
Under the subheading "Menschen" you find topic: "genealogy". But the search-boxes are unabled for the moment.
but under "Wir" is a subheading "Genealogische Anfragen" with an text in English (scrolling down).
I am sure - if you share your knowledge with the group they will try to help you.
The E-Mai-adress is a little bit hidden:

E-Mail: j-i-mecklenburg@gmx.de

As to Henriette/Jette: you are right - that was a very popular name in the 1850ies.
