I can't find anything in his notes indicating the name of his 2nd wife and no mention at all of three marraiges:

"Long was married twice. His first wife was Mary Reynolds (1736–58), of Virginia, whom he wed in 1752; they had two children: Gabriel (b. 1754), who married Sarah Ann Richmond, daughter of William Richmond, who was the brother-in-law of Sir Peyton Skipwith; and Anne, who married William Martin of Halifax. On 24 Aug. 1761 Long married Mary McKinne. They had eight children: Nicholas, Jr. (m. Rebecca Hill; d. 22 Aug. 1819), Mary (m. Bassett Stith of Virginia), Richard H. (m. Betsy Pasture), Lunsford (m. first Rebecca Edwards and second Mary Copeland), Martha (m. General William Gregory), George Washington (m. Sarah C. Jones), John Joseph (m. Frances Quintard), and Lemuel McKinne (m. Mary Amis). The second Mrs. Long was active in supporting the work of her husband. When the army of British commander Lord Cornwallis quartered in Halifax on its way to Yorktown, Va., an officer of the staff of Colonel Banastre Tarlton appropriated her riding horse. The lady, according to a family story, approached Tarlton and demanded, in no uncertain terms, the return of her mount. Apparently, she impressed the old soldier, who granted her request. Surviving for many years after her husband's death, she died at home on 21 Nov. 1821. Long and both his wives were buried at their plantation, Quanky, in Halifax County."

I'm tring to determine whether he was actually married to a Gibson, making me related to their descendants. If he didn't have a Gibson wife, I'm not related to any of his children via Gibson lines.

Thanks in advance for any additional info.

Link for supposed GIbson wife:

Mary Jane or Ann Long

Andl I have to make a correct, according to Geni, I'm more closely connected via Mary McKinnie

Mary McKinnie who does seem to actually have been one of his wives.

I see a note on COl. John's profile stating:

s: DNA matches are strongly indicating John Nicholas Long 1728-1729 is the father of Samuel Long. His mother appears to be the daughter of Gideon Gibson. Work in Process.

And it's the mother of Samuel that mostly concerns me since I'm DNA related to one of his LeFlore wife's relatives who I'm trying to determine how I connect to.

Again, thanks in advance for any info.

I think WIP means exactly that; it’s in study, and there is not certitude as yet.

You could query the managers of

Samuel Long

But I think they would say the same thing.

The note on profile is recent, so it seems unlikely there is a conclusion as yet.

However, I do not see Samuel as a son of Nicholas at DAR.

Debbie, I am just now seeing this request for conversation regarding John Nicholas Long. I am so excited to finally find some one who might talk with me about JNLong. I have reached out many times to strangers regarding this family but never received a sincere response.
My name is Frances Blakemore and the Samuel Long mentioned is definitely my 2nd GGF. Because I know no male to take a Y-DNA test, I have spent the last 5 years connecting myself with my DNA matches. I understand the crudeness of my method but it was all I had. I apologize to those whom my actions might have offended. I have begun to hope that my DNA might be helpful with this particular family line because of my age and the generational gap created by the fact my grandfather, John Thomas Long, was born 175 years ago in 1847; he actually participated in the Civili War.
Please allow me to join this conversation. I have read every writing I have come across, including the one quoted above. I DO NOT understand the scientific terminology of DNA but I Do believe in DNA matches. I have a match to each of the Mary Reynolds’ children and I hame multiple matches to the McKinnie children. And, when I entered a wife as Mary Gibson, about 10-15 Gibson matches traced back in their lines to this person. I read Gideon Gibson was all know as John McKinnie and Mary McKinnie was the same as Mary Gibson; I have not decided but I have begun to wonder if that that might be correct. I have multiple matches that lead to the old merchant Browne who arrived about 1607 and the flow through Gideon Gibson being married to Mary Ann Browne.
I could go on and on all night, but is going on 3am and I must stop. I would love to have good, open conversation about this line.

Debbie, you did mention Samuel Long’s wife Felicity LeFlore, if you don’t mind telling me I might be able to help you. Her father, Louie LeFlore, and his 2 brothers are the beginning of LeFlore family in Mississippi. If DNA is correct, I have DNA from Peru Indian heritage (which I thought would be my Choctaw family) and northern Indian which I have become to believe would be from the browns and Gibson men fathering children with mulatto from 1607 forward.

Erica Howton, you are 1 person I have tried to reach out to several times. We are related somehow. I have wondered if my Samuel Long might be the son Lemuel Long. Far reach, I know. One place I read he died 1804 which is about the time Samuel Long showed up in Mississippi with Louie LeFlore. Then I found other data saying he died in 1834.

Please , Ladies, let me hear from you so I might record the correct family line. I’m probably as far back DNA will reach to this Long line.

Frances

Hi Mary Frances Blakemore - you’ll have to refresh my memory.

By the way, there’s a merge request, please complete:

https://www.geni.com/merge/compare/6000000113982270331

It’s been a long time since I’ve looked at Gibsons. They were off in the distance of my Lawson’s.

Erica Howton yeah, I couldn't find validation for Samuel as son of Nicholas either. It's very possible my connection to the LeFlore descendant is via another route in her tree.

Mary Frances Blakemore oh wow, that's a lot to process! My main goal was to try to determine how I'm a DNA match with a descendant of that LaFlore family. But if Samuel Long isn't a descendant of Nicholas, it's not via that route so must be another way that I'm not seeing in the person's tree. I latched onto a possible connection via the LaFlores because they're from Mississippi and so am I. But my ancestral connection to the cousin in question could be via ancestors prior to Mississippi. It was just a shot in the dark, seeking answers, don't really have any.

That said, Mary (McKinnie) Long is my cousin via Braswell lines. And Mary Anne Gibson (Browne), Congaree River Cheraw is my 16th ggm. So there are multiple ways among these connections that I could be related to the LeFlore descendant.

As for "...Gideon Gibson was all know as John McKinnie and Mary McKinnie was the same as Mary Gibson", I hadn't seen that info before and have no idea if that's correct. They 'seem' to be diffrent people to me, but I've never researched that angle.

The DNA match that brought me to this Discussion has too much in her tree for me to try to share it all here, a very full tree on Gedmatch, and I don't share the gedmatch kits and trees of others on public sites without their permission. She and I are just in an Ancestor project on Gedmatch that I just joined and I was looking at her tree trying to find our connection. I have never even communicated with her personally. I can, however, tell you the name of the Gedmatch Ancestor Project: Barbados & West Indies Native American Study

Hi Mary Frances Blakemore

I’m going ahead and detaching Samuel Long & Mary McKinnie from Col. Nicholas Long, (Rev War)

If I understand correctly, we just don’t hace enough evidence to sustain a link.

Keep plugging away!
