Biography
Emma was born on the 8th of September 1828.[1] She was the daughter of George Kilgour and Margaret Reddish. She was christened on 25 December 1828 at the chapel of St. George, Hulme in the parish of Manchester, Lancashire.[2] This Church was founded in 1828 and It closed in 1983.
Emma Kilgour, 22 of 29 Stanley Street, Hulme, daughter of George Kilgour, spinner, married Edward Powell, 22 of 29 Stanley Street, Hulme, mechanic, son of Edward Powell, mechanic, on 20 Sep 1852 and their marriage was registered in Manchester, Lancashire, England.[3] The witnesses were Alfred Leech and Hannah Kilgour.[4]
Their children included:
1854 John Edward Powell[5]
1857 Mary Eliza (Powell) Mansfield aka Marsh (abt.1857-1915) [6]
1860 Matilda (Powell) Robinson aka Marsh (abt.1859-) [7]
Edward Powell and Emma may have separated, as Edward is probably the Edward Powel, age 30, born in Manchester and working as a baker, that was lodging with George and Ann Keate, at what appears to be a lodging house at 4 Deal Street, Salford, Lancashire in 1861.[8]
In 1861, she was living as the wife of Edward Marsh, although no marriage has been found. They may not have married because Emma's first husband was still alive. Their children included:
Mary Marsh (1862-)
Hannah Marsh (abt.1865-)
John Henry Marsh (1869-abt.1894)
Emma was mentioned as being buried aged 69 on the 23 May 1900 on a memorial in Toxteth Park Cemetery, Toxteth, Metropolitan Borough of Liverpool, Merseyside, England. She is buried on plot: Sec. 6, Grave 636 together with Edward Marsh and John Henry Marsh[9]“
Research notes
She is not Emma Cadwallader from the 1859 marriage record as that couple appear in the census records with a child middle named Cadwallader and children's birth registered with that maiden name for the mother. There doesn't seem to be a marriage record for this couple under the spelling Marsh or anything similar.
For John Henry there are two Liverpool based registrations, one is for John Henry Marsh (1869-1934). Another one which is also registered in the area the family was living in 1871 and hence a good possibility has the mother's maiden name as Kilgour. (GRO Reference: 1869 J Quarter in WEST DERBY AND TOXTETH PARK Volume 08B Page 245). There are a Mary Eliza and Matilda that match in Hulme with the surname Powell, daughters of Edward Powell and Emma Kilgour. Current theory is that Edward Powell and Edward Marsh are the same person or otherwise Edward Marsh is likely not the father of Mary and Matilda and Emma left her husband in 1860 for Edward Marsh. There is only one year between the birth of Matilda and the appearance of the family under the surname Marsh in the 1861 census. Mary Eliza was living with her grandmother Kilgour in 1861.
1881 Census shows granddaughter Eliza H Robinson (daughter of Matilda) living with them.
Theory -“She later went by the surname Marsh (see research note). She passed away in 1900.
[The above research note written by a different researcher] Edward Powell and Edward Marsh are different people with different professions and fathers. For this reason I have detached the children born Powell from Edward Marsh.Hardman-1532 15:42, 14 May 2022 (UTC)
Possible child of Edward Powell and Emma is son Edward baptised 25 Feb 1855 at All Saints, Liverpool, Lancashire, England. Could not locate a UK GRO INDEX with matching surname though. See: https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:NNWZ-S7C
