Find A Grave indicates Samuel Taylor is Cherokee

Susanne Floyd

Erica Howton

Could either of you ladies lend a hand?

Susanne I see Taylor is on the list of Lumbee surnames.

Private User, I just saw this. Taylor is a common name so it could be both. I believe that their are rolls for the Eastern Cherokee that can be consulted to confirm.

I typed in "Samuel Taylor" in the Dawes Rolls and found a number of named Taylor applications, for Cherokee listing, but they will need to be searched. I think best to see if any of Samuel's children filed since he was deceased by the time the rolls were constructed. However, the rolls do not contain everyone as noted here https://www.reference.com/history-geography/look-up-roll-numbers-ch... .

I am swamped with work, Private User, not sure when I can get back. Do some searching to see what you can find in the rolls. There is another roll that may have the Eastern Band specifically. Would need more time to find it.

Erica Howton is the above correct for Robert to start with?

We have the project https://www.geni.com/projects/Cherokee-Genealogy-and-History/12 to ask questions, that’s the best way to get assistance from Cherokee focused researchers.

Yes, extreme care to research. Taylor is such a common name.

To answer Susanne’s question on where to start when we see a profile described as Cherokee we want to verify, it’s actuality easiest to just look at US Federal census. If they were Indian, they’d be enumerated that way. This Samuel Taylor of Buncombe County is marked “white” from 1820-1870.

Profile at Ancestry has this but I don't see him here so I untagged him. Please see:

Link didn’t work.

Not sure why… brb

Ok, the link works for me but I don’t see it in my media so I will retag it and you’s can let me know if I need to un or re tag it

Re added it and then found it so retagged it. Ugh.
Thoughts?

I see the chart here:

www.geni.com/media/proxy?media_id=6000000196331029838&size=large

Which is interesting, Can you spot the Joseph > Samuel that correlates with the other collected data?

Is there an ancestry tree associated with the chart?

I had added the link to the Ancestry profile/account I found it on
I can revisit

Erica, unfortunately we cannot add media to the Discussion but fortunately a curator can. Glad you are able to see it— I will look again tomorrow evening… spending the day with family Saturday but this is interesting and I hope to help

Thanks to all! I am in the middle of my grad students' summer intensive and have an Empty Bowls event going on today and a masters' exhibition with my students tonight. This week and next are crazy.

Erica, were did you find that chart?

Susanne what is an empty bowls event?

Cynthia Curtis, A183502, US7875087 Found the chart at Ancestry.com

Erica,

He was he born in Kentucky?
Does his appearance on this chart necessarily mean he belongs to this tree?

Cynthia thank you

I don’t know.

Private User, here is a link that describes "Empty Bowls"

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oUsOUc-bw_k

We do it in my summer class as a service project and bring in the college and local community. It is a great thing.

The chart came from here:
GENEALOGY - TAYLOR, chart (up-dated, 2014)
Donna Frances Schwartz originally shared this on 24 Jun 2014
https://www.ancestry.com/mediaui-viewer/collection/1030/tree/180452...

and is saved to this tree: https://www.ancestry.com/family-tree/person/tree/180452456/person/1...

Here is the link to the profile for the Ancestry user who added the chart: https://www.ancestry.com/profile/01be30ff-0001-0000-0000-0000000000...
She has five public trees.

In case you don’t see the ancestry tree, no parents are given for Samuel Taylor & he’s born in Maryland, so it’s unclear to me what relevance the chart has.

Erica Howton I added the chart to the media and then looked closer and could not see him so untagged but untagging meant no one could see it is why I made the comments here. I am glad you were able to peruse it more. I will untag again.
Thanks!

Did the info about him being a miller and blacksmith come from you?

I didnt know you were a ceramicist. Jim Leedy was my professor at KCAI. His friend Rudy Autio and Peter Voulkos were visiting artists quite often.
