There is absolutely zero proof that James 2 and his first wife, Dorothy, ever had children together. James had two proven daughters with his 2nd wife, Martha Poel. The two girls were born in Perquiman's Precinct, now NC. Mary and Elizabeth b 1698 and 1699. Dorothy would marry Godfrey Stanton/Staunton in 1711. Their joint will names no children for either one of them. Dorothy leaves everything to her "much beloved" godson and nephew, Thomas Wyatt, son of her younger half sister, Kathryn Long Tunstall Wyatt and her 2nd husband, Captain Richard Wyatt. If Dorothy had all of these children - all of who were still living when she died in 1714 - why did she leave nothing to a single one of them nor even mention them in her will? The reason is she had no children with James 2 or with Godfrey Stanton/Staunton. As I mentioned above, James did have two daughters with 2nd wife, Martha Poel - they were born in Perquiman's Precinct - a good distance from St. George Parish in Maryland. James 2 and Dorothy left MD in 1685 and headed back to Rappahannock County, VA. Not long after their return to VA, he left Dorothy and ran off to Henrico County, Va with Martha Poel, daughter of John Poel - marriage record is posted to James 2's documents. That said, there is another James Fugate in MD, who has numerous chldren with his wife, Ann. They are named as parents of the other children who are named in this record as children of James 2 and Dorothy. I will post those records in James 2's documents. I believe people are confusing the 2 James' and their children. The James who was the father of Andrew, Thomas and also an Elizabeth and Mary, is the James who was born in 1676 Maryland, who married Ann - maiden name not known. This James and Ann are found in the parish records of St. George, Baltimore County, MD and are listed as the parents of these children you have identified as children of James 2 and Dorothy. There is proof of this James in several records in Baltimore County, MD. One of those records is what Mary D. Fugate refers to as Three Lifetime Leases. The first lease was made in late Nov 1742. It gives James' age as 66, which would make his birth year about 1676. Trees claim his wife, Ann, died earlier the same year. Like their marriage, a record of her death has not been found. James of 1676 is the main signator on the first of these three leases. It names several of his children and provides their ages. Roughly 2 weeks later, in mid December 1742, the lease is amended. James' name has been replaced by that of John Hooper. James and Ann had minor children at the time of their deaths and John Hooper is most likely the guardian of these minor children and a maternal relative. In 1743, the 3rd of these Leases is made. Names the children and shows they are another year older but the two eldest boys are no longer in the lease - they are of the right age to have been apprenticed but no record of such has been found in the Chancery Records in Maryland State Archive. I make no claims for anything I cannot prove via a record - if there is no record of my surmising, I say no record has been found. Records are posted in documents for James 2, Dorothy and for Martha. I have spent the last 18 months doing a deep dive in search of these original records in an effort to see for myself what is provable. I was really quite surprised by what I've found. There are so many more records out here on the internet that weren't available when Mary D Fugate and David Faris did their research in the 70's, 80's and into the early 2000's, it is much easier for us to find them now. I hope you will consider the information in the records I post and possibly make corrections to this page. There is so much bad information out here on the internet it will be a monumental task to set it all straight, but I'm going to try - nothing ventured, Nothing gained.
