I hit a roadblock when I got to this profile because some trees have her parents as John Moore and Elizabeth Tassle, with the Native lineage of her son coming from her mother's Tassel side. So I came to Geni to see what her profile notes might say and what connections she has on this site.
As far as I can see, there is nothing in the lineage in the parents connected to Mary here on Geni to suggest any Native on those lines, which makes sense in light of the notes in her profile. that they're not her parents.
Trees on Ancestry have info from Greene's book Shawnee Heritage v. 5 mentioning Mary as the daughter of James Moore and Sarah Ayers and states she was 1/8th Pekowi-Metis. It seems to be from his book that her name Many Ears is sourced. Ancestry trees show her married name as Hembree / Emory / Amory, as variants of the same surname. In any case, this matches the info in her profile notes regarding her parents and the Native lineage in the family.
I'll attach the info from Greene's book. I know some people are dismissive about some of his genealogy work, at least in part, but I'm just sharing what I've found on this Mary in an effort to try to get better clarification on her parentage.
Anyway, Mary is showing as my distant cousin on the connected Moore lines here on Geni. From what I've read in her notes and on Ancestry, I don't think she's my Moore cousin, at least not the way presently connected.
I haven't seen her mother listed as Justina Smith anywhere but here on Geni.
Thanks in advance for any clarification on Mary's family connections here on Geni. I completely believe she had Native American lineage, as indicated in Greene's book. Also, this is an excerpt from his FInd-a-Grave page on Ancestry:
"John Amory Sr came from England with his wife Sarah & some children. Some say John Jr, William & Robert belonged to another woman who died & was buried in England. Some say Isaac & Sarah belonged to Sarah therefore were half-sibs to John Jr, William & Robert. Some say there wasn't many women in South Carolina in those days. So I'm not sure about John Jr but when William & Robert met Ludovic Grant they married his mixed blood Cherokee daughters."
Almost all the trees I've seen on Ancestry show her married surname as Hembree / Amory / Emory as variants of the same name. However, it seems that all the records on her husband John indicate he went by John Amory, not Hembree or Emory. But they show various family members using the variations:
From Ancestry:
Geneanet Community Trees Index
Name John Amory
Gender M (Male)
Birth Date 1695
Birth Place Boston, Lincolnshire, England, United Kingdom
Death Date 3 oct. 1746 (3 Oct 1746)
Death Place Charleston, Dorchester County (Charleston), South Carolina, USA
Spouse Mary Many Ears Moore; Sarah Amory
Child John Old John Hembree Amory-Hembree; John Amory; William Emory
Anyway, it 'seems' that it's more likely her parents were those listed in Greene's book and referenced in her profile notes. I don't know if she'd still be my Moore cousin via those connections, but I don't think she's a daughter of Rev. John Moore and Justina Smith. I could be wrong, but I haven't seen anything to source those connections to her.
Thanks in advance for any additional info, clarification regarding her pathways here on Geni.
"All' that said, I just went to her son's profle and his notes list a totally different potential mother for Mary:
"John Emory was the son of Englishman JOHN AMORY (d.1746 SC) and a Cherokee woman whose English name may have been MARY (MOORE) AYERS. She was probably the grand-daughter of Col. James Moore (who was the son of Governor James Moore of South Carolina) and a Cherokee woman of Keowee."
That at least ties her Native lineage into their family connections, but offers up a totally different set of parents to what is connected here on Geni or even in Greene's book.
