John Matthews, Sr. did NOT die in Ohio -- at least his estate was administered in Richmond Co., NC
John Mathis died in late 1807 or early January, 1808. The inventory on Film 407 is dated 9 January 1808. Letters of Administration were granted to Richeson, Olive, and Ford on 18 January, after the inventory was complete. Interestingly William "Hampton" Mathis and Daniel Snead also signed the Letters of Administration document. It is unclear on how Snead is connected. Document 446 is the important in connecting the name Hampton, to William, and W.H. Mathis. This is the only place that William and Hampton appear together that I have seen. It is also important to note that as John is described as a Senior, that there must be a John Junior, and as the John who died in 1823 is described as Ford's brother, they are probably father and son. I can't imagine why the firstborn son isn't listed on the estate records. Olive is found in the 1810 census and then does not appear again in any available records. John may have left minor daughters Nelly, and Nancy. See the Richmond County Apprentice Bond Records. He may also have had a daughter Sally who married Aris Luncford in 1800. A deed of Ford mentions two tracts of land laid off, one for Ford, and the other to Luncford in his wife's right.

Richmond Co., NC, Estate of John Matthews
Inventory of the estate of John Matthews, Decd. taken this 9th day of January 1808.
Care must be taken when reading the estate papers for Richmond Co., NC. The papers of John Sr. (d. c1807/8) and those of John Jr. (d.Feb 1823) have been intermingled and cn be VERY misleading unless one pays close attention. For example, John Jr.'s widow was Delilah & is often shown as the daughter of Hix Cain. She was not. The estate records indicate that Hix Cain was the husband of John Jr.'s daughter Chloe. I do not know Delilah's maiden name, but she was likely John Jr.'s 2nd wife, since Delilah did not know the whereabouts of the two older children, Chloe & Thomas.
There are many more details in the estate files, but again -- careful reading!

Do not confuse with Revolutionary War patriot John Matthews of South Carolina or Quaker John Shreve Mathis of New Jersey. They are three separate people.
