The birth information for John Campbell is incorrect.
John Campbell my GGX4 married to Janet Moir and died on the 9th of January 1839.
What is incorrect however is his birth date and location of birth.
Actual birth date is the 7th January 1777 in Fairburn, Urray Ross and Cromarty, Scotland
This makes the Haplogroup incorrect for Johns father and grandparents that are incorrectly identified on this tree.
John Campbell father was Kenneth Campbell and Margaret MacDonald and he had at least 4 siblings, Donald, Helen, Isabe/Isobel/Isabellal and C/Katherine
The below Y chromosome Analysis is in support of the above.
Big Y - SNP Analysis
Colin D Campbell
Introduction
My name is Colin David Campbell born in Dundee, Scotland on the 16th July 1947.
Between 2015 and 2017 I had various tests associated with my Y chromosome, initially the Y67 test, followed by the Y111 test, both these tests are based on STR’s (short tandem repeat) methodology.
These two tests provided me with a hi level haplogroup of R-M269 that is extremely common in people in todays North West Europe.
It is believed using current available data that R-M269 was formed (mutated to) around 6,000 years ago north of the Black Sea in the west of current day Kazakhstan.
Later I tested using the Big 500 SNP process.
Results from STR Testing
STR" (short tandem repeat)
The results of the STR testing provided me with matches to three testers named Campbell.
Donald John Campbell, Genetic Distance 1 at Y111 markers
John Duncan Campbell lll, Genetic Distance 9 at Y111 markers
David Campbell, Genetic Distance 7 at Y 67 markers
In the first instance I contacted Donald John Campbell as he was my closest match.
Determining how Colin D Campbell and Donald J Campbell were Related
Donald John Campbell had researched and found his GGX3 Donald Campbell through the 1814 birth of his son Kenneth Campbell his GGX2 in Killearnan, Ross and Cromarty, Scotland but could not find any details on Donald Campbell.
I remembered the 1805 OPR baptism / birth record in Aberdeenshire, Scotland of Margaret Campbell the first child of my GGX4 John Campbell that a witness at the baptism was Donald Campbell.
I started to research Killearnan and Ross and Cromarty and it was not long before we were able to find the birth date and location for my GGX4 John Campbell whose details I had been stuck on for over 30 years.
On John Campbell baptism OPR record dated 9th of March 1777 It states a number of things that interested me, first that he was born on the 7th of March 1777 in Fairburn in the parish of Urray, Ross and Cromarty, Scotland. Secondly it provided me John parents names being Kenneth Campbell and Margaret MacDonald.
With further research I found the statutory death record for Donald Campbell with parents Kenneth Campbell and Margaret MacDonald, eureka i had a breakthrough.
So my GGX4 John Campbell born 1777 had a brother Donald born about 1780 (from age at time of death) who was my fellow tester Donald John Campbell GGX3.
This finding was very much inline with the 1 step genetic distance identified through STR testing.
Big Y SNP Advance Testing
Single nucleotide polymorphisms, frequently called SNPs (pronounced “snips”)
Once SNP testing came available in 2015 /16, I was tested using FTDNA Big Y 500 test that is said at the time to be far more advanced / accurate in determine Y chromosome age estimates.
Nothing much changed for me initially as a result of taking the Big Y 500 test other than being assigned a new haplogroup of R-CTS3655 downstream of R-269.
Mutation R-CTS3655 occurred approximately 3,500 years ago, somewhere close to both Ireland and Scotland so I suppose that was a slight improvement knowing that my Y chromosome had been in Scotland for close to 3,500 years.
I got a nice surprise sometime in 2021 when my assigned haplogroup was updated by FTDNA to R-BY60469. This was due to a new Big Y 700 test belonging to Charles Pomeroy being processed.
The mutation that occurred approximately 1300 years ago believed at this stage to be in the West of Scotland or even on one of the Hebridean islands as this is where Charles Pomeroy believes his ancestry is from.
You shall note that Charles does not have the Campbell name as in 650 CE, modern names as we know today just did not exist also Charles has an modern day adoption in his parental line that is possibly linked to the name Chisholm or MacLeod in the western Isles.
A new Haplogroup was formed in 2023 after Donald John Campbell upgraded his Y111 test to Big Y 700.
This modern day Haplogroup / SNP of R-BY74936 that both Donald John Campbell and Colin David Campbell share mutated approximately about 1700 CE. This date is an estimate that is a little earlier than when we believe our shared common ancestor was born between 1745 and 1755.
We do know that Kenneth was still alive in 1814 as he is a witness at his grandson Kenneth’s baptism. Just out of interest Alexander Campbell his other grandfather was also a witness at Kenneth baptism,
Analysing our Big Y Results
Analysis 1
Colin David Campbell and Charles Pomeroy share SNP R-BY60469, we both share hundreds of SNP that formed prior to the time that R-BY60469 was created / mutated approximately 1300 years ago.
In the past 1300 years since I mutated away from Charles and my common ancestor my unique Y chromosome has gone through many mutation that I shall share with Donald John Campbell but not with Charles Pomeroy.
The list of SNP that represents these mutations are as follows that are not in a particular order: all commence R-.
BY60469 - The last common SNP that I share with Charles.

FTC39486 FTC39492 FTE384 FTE385
It is my belief that John Duncan Campbell lll and David Campbell shall also share the majority of these SNP’s as my common ancestor with them probably has a date stamp around 1400 CE.
Analysis 2
Colin David Campbell and Donald John Campbell share SNP R-BY60469, we both share hundreds of SNP that formed prior to the time that R-BY74936 was created / mutated approximately 250 /300 years ago with the birth of Kenneth Campbell.
In the past 250 / 300 years since I mutated away from Donald John Campbell and our common ancestor Kenneth Campbell my unique Y chromosome has gone through a small number of mutations that are unique to me at the moment. Donald John Campbell does not carry these SNP private mutations.
The list of SNP’s that represents these mutations are as follows that are not in a particular order: all commence R-.
R-BY7436 The last common SNP that I share with Donald.
BY113639 BY121070 BY131003 BY140498
BY47187 FTD92143 Y31707
In summary the above SNP mutations occurred between the birth of John Campbell born in 1777 and myself born 1947.
I believe Donald John Campbell shall also have a shorter list of unique private SNP’s that have mutated between the birth of Donald Campbell born about 1780 and Donald John Campbell.
I believe the list to be shorter as I have 7 generations in my line where Donald has 5. It would be nice to know if the list of private variants that I have with Charles is the same for Donald and again it would be interesting to see the short list of private variants that Donald has with me.

Going Forward
Yesterday the 5th of August I upgraded my Big Y500 test to a Big Y700 test. I believe it takes 8 to 10 weeks to process and go through the review process so shall be October sometime before I see the results.
What am I expecting?
No change to our current Haplogroup R-BY7436 unless one of Donalds private variants / SNP are uncovered / matched by me upgrading.
I would like to think we may get a little closer to 1750 with the DNA age estimate for Kenneth Campbell birth.
Going forward:
Recruit one of my male Campbell 1st 2nd or 3rd cousins to take the Big Y 700 test. This most certainly shall remove some of my private variants and assign a new Haplogroup.
Big Y testing for John Duncan Campbell lll and David Campbell would be a benefit to them, both as it would certainly create at least one new haplogroup between Charles Pomeroy and Donald / myself.
