The profile of Robert McFarland could use some help. Perhaps a curator can assist? There are two spouses attached, but I'm pretty sure only one belongs with this profile: The marriage to Margaret Harris took place in Philadelphia, and Robert was squarely in North Carolina. Then there's the will, which mentions half a dozen children not included here. Before I go adding a whole bunch of folks, does it make sense to merge this other Robert Robert I McFarland, Sr profile, which seems to have all of the children mentioned in the will? That opens a whole other can of worms, of course .... help!

And I took one look at https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/McFARLAND-993 and that’s a yikes! From me. Oye.

OK - this is the Lancaster PA line, according to

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/McFarland-3365

Robert McFarland

  • Born 7 Apr 1730 in Donegal Twp, Lancaster, Pennsylvania
  • Died before 1798 before age 67 in Kentucky, United States
  • Son of John McFarland and Mary Elizabeth (Montgomery) McFarland
  • wife UNKNOWN

This is not the same person as Robert McFarland who married Margaret Harris and lived in Orange VA.

DNA evidence supports Robert 1730 - 1789 direct lineage to "Scotland John" McFarland and it is supported by the McFarland Clan Genealogist

(per Clan McFarland website) as well as some DNA confirmation, Robert and Martha had at least the following children :

  • James McFarland [MacFarlane], b. Abt 1752, Virginia, d. 1815, Christian Co., Kentucky(Age ~ 63 years) m Martha Washington MCMACKIN [note= I believe that this website needs to be updated, and references the incorrect 'Ella James" spouse for James]
  • John McFarland [MacFarlane], b. Abt 1761[note- s/b born bet 1752-1754], Virginia, d. 1815, Christian Co., Kentucky m Janette MOORE in Rockbridge VA in 1779

Robert Henry McFarland

Clan McFarland website has established the parents of Robert as John Orrin McFarland / Mary Elizabeth Knox Montgomery. DNA evidence shows that this Roberts line while very distantly related to the Lancaster Co. PA line, is not descended from it.

To make it more confusing:

FamilySearch OWT claims this is the "Scotland John" ancestor of multiple American lines. However although both married a Mary Montgomery all other birth and death details are different.

Ditto for sons Robert who have different DOB & DOD details and married different women.

All the other children allocated to this couple by FamilySearch OWT belong to "Scotland" John.
