Per Robert Brings Plenty
Curator note: It’s possible that the name “Brings Plenty” has been used by English Americans as a surname. Given the addition of the anglicized given name Robert, this seems logical. I am pursuing this question further with those who have a background in Sioux history and genealogy.

And many memorials for Brings Plenty as a two names surname

The primary question here is that our profile for Robert Brings Plenty, a Lakota Sioux, uses an anglicized given name Robert. Census recorded show a father with only the compound name Brings Plenty. Census records also show that Robert had two siblings James and Michael, both anglicized. Census records also show a John Brings Plenty born two years later in the same geographic location who could be a younger brother of the father, although this is not yet proven.

So did Roberts father Brings Plenty have an anglicized given name? Was it at this generation where the anglicized given name as part of the Indian assimilation was introduced. Currently we show him as NN Brings Plenty, which is Geni speak. Is that name correct? Is that correct from the Sioux perspective?

The question is one of accuracy.

I see in the profile for Robert Brings Plenty

In June 1900 Robert Brings Plenty was shown on the 1900 Pine Ridge Indian Agency U.S Census as living at home with his father Brings Plenty and mother Bend.

So that the fact we have so far.

I think the parent names are best as (first name field only) Brings Plenty and Bend.

I we ever find out out their Lakota names, move ‘Brings Plenty’ to the middle name field with a single quote around it. This is the same way I handle anglicized German names for example.

Alternately, we do have a language module for Lakota.
