Hate to be the bearer of bad news, but this whole family needs to be taken apart and reconstructed. Dorothy ______(and there's no proof that she was the daughter of James Martin) was not the mother of the children of Peter Smith. Dorothy was married first to Thomas Roson and when she died (1743) her will named only her grandchildren--by her daughter Thomasine who married Thomas Winstead. If she'd had children by Peter Smith, surely she wouldn't have left them out. There's another hint that she's not their mother. The will of Peter Smith in 1717 says "Wife: Dorothy, personalty and use of dwelling plantation during life. No part of her estate to be claimed by Executor as belonging to testator, she having relinquished her dower rights." Sounds to me as if there had probably been a prenuptial agreement to protect Dorothy's estate.
