I noticed that in this Sir John Winter's profile notes it states:

"John's parents are uncertain. His father is not (as often claimed) Robert Winter, son of Roger Winter and Elizabeth Hungerford, because that Robert Winter was born about 1520 according to information given in the Visitations of Gloucestershire."

and yet, Robert Winter is attached as his father.

I find that this site is usually correct:

https://www.stirnet.com/genie/

and they have the genealogy as follows:

'Winter01'Index links to: Lead / Letter
Families covered: Winter of Coleford, Wynter of Dyrham Park (Winter of Derham), Winter of Dymock, Wintour (Winter) of Huddington, Winter (Wintour) of Lydney

Parents for this Sir John are listed as:

Robert Winter of Hodyngton (b c1501, d 1549)
m1. Katherine Throgmorton (dau of Sir George Throgmorton)

Katherine's name is also seen elsehwere as Throckmorton.

The profile attached for father Robert shows he was married to Elizabeth Winter (Wyrrall) and Margery Wynter (Huddington), but this site:

https://freepages.rootsweb.com/~pillagoda/genealogy/ch10-03.htm

states:

"According to the Visitation of Worcestershire (1569) Robert married Elizabeth Wyrall as his first wife and Katherine Throckmorton as his second wife. She outlived him to marry Thomas Smyth of Chipping Campden and is mentioned in his inquisition postmortem. However this does not explain why Robert's son John (if by his first wife Elizabeth Wyrall) did not inherit Huddington."

So that indicates that Robert and Elizabeth Wyrall did have a son named John but is not mentioned specifically as the John who married Alice Tirry. In fact, Alice and her family aren't mentioned on the site.

It goes on to state such things as:

" There is some confusion here about how the Winters of Lydney were related to the Winters of Huddington but in the reign of Charles I, Sir John Winter of Lydney was known as a cousin of the Gunpowder Plotters....John Winter of Lydney may have been the same person connected with or mentioned in a cartulary of an abbey or monastery in Brecon and was ward of Sir Nicholas Poyntz of Iron Acton."

which clearly indicates they don't know how this Sir John Winter of Lydney connects to the others, which confirms the profile note that his parents are unknown.

Debbie Gambrell Mt usual question. What child are you tracking to which immigrant?

Private User Could use your head on this.

I was tracing upline on my son's paternal side and everything is fine until I get to John who was married to Alice Tirry and that's when things don't match for John's connections. So it's John parentage I was questioning.

I've seen the links you shared, which I was attempting to match with stuff that spells the names differently, etc.

My take-away from everything was that, as stated in his profile, The parents of John who was married to Alice Tirrell don't seem to be known.

But that not what the visitation has for Alice Winter

That’s why I’m confused & calling on more help.

I meant which specific American. Your sons parental line has a lot of ancestors. :)

Roger Winter of Huddington (d 06.03.1535) - continued above
m. Elizabeth Hungerford (dau of Sir John Hungerford)

There is some uncertainty over the sons & wives of the next generation. Visitation (Worcestershire) shows Gilbert then a Robert who m1. Elizabeth Wirrall (mother of John who m. Allice Tirry) …

1. Robert Winter of Hodyngton (b c1501, d 1549) m1. Katherine Throgmorton (dau of Sir George Throgmorton) …

D. John Winter or Wynter in Bristol, later of Lydney, Gloucestershire (d 1546)

m. Alice Tirrey (dau/heir of William Tirey/Tyrrye of Cork in Ireland (by Jane Gamage), son of William by dau of John, brother of Earl of Desmond)

i. Sir William Winter or Wintour of Lydney (d 21.02.1589, Admiral) m. Mary Langton (dau of Thomas Langton)

I don’t understand where they’re getting dates from.

John's parents are uncertain. His father is not (as often claimed) Robert Winter, son of Roger Winter and Elizabeth Hungerford, because that Robert Winter was born about 1520 according to information given in the Visitations of Gloucestershire.[2]

2. Visitations of Gloucestershire (1623), page 282: https://books.google.com/books?id=Lm4-AQAAMAAJ&pg=PA282

Which is a list of IPMs (death dates).

Well, not being able to figure it out is why I started the Discussion to get more eyes on it. I visited the Stirnet site, which is typically correct, but I couldn't make sense out of the connections for this John on there either.

They even state:

Roger Winter of Huddington (d 06.03.1535) - continued above
m. Elizabeth Hungerford (dau of Sir John Hungerford)

There is some uncertainty over the sons & wives of the next generation.

Visitation (Worcestershire) shows Gilbert then a Robert who m1. Elizabeth Wirrall (mother of John who m. Allice Tirry) m2. Catherin Throgmorton (mother of George, m2. Thomas Smyth). Visitation (Gloucestershire) shows Gilbert then Robert (m. Elizabeth Wyrall, mother of John who m. Alicia Tirrey) and another Robert (m. Katharen Throgmorton, mother of George) but the Harleian editor also shows that the Robert whose widow was Katherine (family name not given) was Roger's heir. VCH (Worcestershire, vol 3, Parishes: Huddington) reports that the widow of the Robert who d 1549 was Catherine (family name not given) who m2. Thomas Smith. Note that Visitation (Warwickshire, 1619, Throgmorton) shows that Katherine Throgmorton m1. William Smith m2. Thomas Smith of Camden. Provisionally, we follow what is given by the Ingilby History site but this leads us to presume that the various Visitations are all wrong as to the identification of the wife of Thomas Smith

I tried to follow it, I'm just not as good at this as I used to be. sigh
