Profiles Mentioned:

Thomas Mitchley's existance dates from E Morse-Jones' published lists of 1820 settlers. His work was based on post-1820 documents and records.

All other authorities, and the actual ship's lists in London and Cape Town make no mention of Thomas.

Francis Hugh de Souza's book "In search of Ann Mitchley" demonstrates pretty conclusively that Ann Mitchley was never married and lived with Peter Daniel and bore him 10 children, the first 4 in London, the remaining 6 in the Cape. Her own Death Notice is pretty clear on this point, as is her will. Mitchley is demonstrated to be her maiden name, not that of her husband.

Some of these illegitimate children "made up" a name for their father to disguise the reality, and this is the only evidence we have for this ghost of a man. Would this group consider deleting his profile and acknowledging Peter Clarke Daniel as the father of Anne Mitchley's children?
