Hello fellow family researchers and lovers of history. I wanted to share that I recently tracked down the rural homestead of Thunder Bay Finnish immigrant Kalle Lehtinen. He lived in Sunshine Ontario (outside of Thunder Bay) until his passing in 1952. The area is beautiful but the only sign left of inhabitation was the collapsed roof of his horse's shed. I am interested in hearing from anyone who has information about Kalle (Kaarlo) Lehtinen who lived first in Fort William, then Port Arthur, sometimes in Nipigon before settling in Sunshine. He was reclusive and much time has passed but I am always hopeful. His daughter Anni had photos which included many Finnish friends and I would also love to share them with families who knew those individuals. Angela Meady

Hello, is he the one, who all ready have a profile Kalle Kustaa Lehtinen? Born in Kangasala 18.12.1869 and died in 12.8.1952 in Mokomon Thunder Bay.

My great grandfather, Oscar Wierkko was the first settler in Sunshine according to “A Chronicle of Finnish Settlements in Rural Thunder Bay” Bay Street Project No 2.
I am relatively new to both my biological family and searching ancestry. I do know he was born in Sara Finland 13.02.1873 and died 16.04.1941 in Sunshine Ontario.
Upon checking the above book I see “Lehtinen,K. Listed under “some residents of Sunshine 1936. There does not appear to be any other references to him .

Angela Meady - "Angela Meady is your 18th cousin." Hello cousin! :)

The Thunder Bay Brodie Resource Library has a couple of Books in their Thunder Bay Genealogical Society section that chronical the earliest Finn settlers in the areas of Intola, Finmark, and other areas in the District of Thunder Bay. Cynthia commented about one of those books above. I do not recall the name of the other book that they have on file there.

My maternal great grandparents were Emil and Maria Tuuri from the Intola area, just off of Mapleward Road. Their farm was land-locked and did not have their own road access back in the day. Their farm was not too far from Sunshine. About a 10 min drive by today's standard.

The Brodie Library was a valuable resource for family tree information when I first started my research back in 1988. Between the Genealogical files they have there as well as the access to microfilm of old newspapers where so much data is stored, it was a genealogists dream back in those day before internet research became a more viable thing. If I were still living there I would of been happy to run to the library to find the information for you,.. but I am on the west coast now. But if you were to contact someone from the Thunder Bay Genealogical Society, I am sure they would be happy to assist you in finding more info on your relative.

And in closing "Kalle Kustaa Tuomaanpoika Lehtinen is your 15th cousin thrice removed." So he is a relative of mine too. :)

To the person who asked "Hello, is he the one, who all ready have a profile Kalle Kustaa Lehtinen? Born in Kangasala 18.12.1869 and died in 12.8.1952 in Mokomon Thunder Bay.
Marja-Leena Töyrylä". Yes, I believe so.
