I also can not find any reference to Jan (Johannes) Petrus Smit

Will remove Petrus. Many thanks

The birth place for Jan is currently locked as "Maastricht,Delft,..." this can't be correct. Maastricht and Delft are distinct cities in The Netherlands (quite far away from each other - it is not unlikely that Jan has moved between the two as he was a soldier and both had garnizoens).
Sorry, I don't know which is correct.

Delft comes from the place of baptism. I'll lock it on that pending more Documentation being found, although it's entirely possibly they went from his place of birth - Maastricht to Delft to have him baptised.

Ball is citing 1693 Cape archives p127 for Maastricht https://www.ballfamilyrecords.co.uk/smit/I224.html - see if you can find those.
Also check that Delft didn't reference a greater provincial area that included Maastricht in 1693.

"Also check that Delft didn't reference a greater provincial area that included Maastricht in 1693." check result: is for sure not true. Holland was the greater unit for Delft and Holland definately excluded Maastricht.
The other issues I leave for other managers to research (I only became 'by accident' a manager on one of his son's profiles). I'm happy to point out mistakes, so that further research is encouraged instead the mistake continuing its own life and being multiplied in many other trees.

Thank you

It seems he was born in Maastricht, but stationed in Delft
some info about his marriage:

Possibly some info about his parents: https://www.wiewaswie.nl/nl/detail/57294261

Thanks Job - That's useful - I've added to the About & updated
no confirmation of Maastricht itself though?
(I'm going to use this together with Ball's citing 1693 Cape archives p127 for Maastricht https://www.ballfamilyrecords.co.uk/smit/I224.html to change to that.)

No, I can't find anything about Maastricht at the moment.

Your source for the parents is the first useful one we've had. Thank you.
