Hi!

I'm looking for help from Hungarian, Slovakian, Subcarpathian Polish and Yiddish readers in finding newspaper coverage of the explosion that tragically killed my 3rd great grandfather in Tolcsva in 1887, a year after his wife's death. I only just got the hearsay story from a descendant of Jakab's eldest child and daughter, and I figure an event like that would make the papers in and around Zemplen. I seek the story in part because it may help point out if Jakab had any relatives in Tolcsva aside from his children, and would also likely list the number of his children who were subsequently orphaned.

The vineyards of Tokaj and the surrounding areas, including Tolcsva, were already serious subjects for news at the time because the American Phylloxera grape-root insect had only just invaded Hungary and begun wiping out a significant portion of Europe's vineyards, bringing families to ruin.

Thanks for any help you might provide!

Pardon me — I meant to write that Phylloxera had begun ruining Hungary's vineyards. It had already made its way through Austria and other countries after hitching a ride on American ships around 1860.

Some of my ancestors were from Tolcsva (Friedman, Schwartz).
