I've tried to explain the mix up going on here, seems to be to no avail. Clearly the wrong person is being attached as mother of Patrick Bruce Christening 25 Jul 1691 as his mother is Joan Scobie who was born 1665. This Jean Scobie b. 1671, spouse of Thomas Bruce b 1668 is clearly incorrect. What is going on here?

Dear Philip,

Jean Scobie was the wife of Thomas Bruce, flesher and brewer in Coupar Angus. This is confirmed by her testament dative and inventory, which was confirmed on 8 June 1727. For an abstract of this deed, and digital images of the same, see her profile overview.

It was you and NOT ME who identified this couple as the parents of your claimed ancestor Patrick Bruce (baptised 23 July 1691). Moreover, it was you and NOT ME who identified Jean Scobie as the daughter of James Scobie and Janet Arthur and entered her birth date as 10 October 1671.

So tell me please. What really is the problem?

Sincerely,

Neil

Patrick Bruce Christening is 25 July 1691 Coupar Angus, Angus, Scotland. Look at the date on his baptism record it's a 5 not 3, the ink blob makes it look like a 3. I've loaded full family records to his profile. What amazed me is that both these mixed up Patrick Bruce's had the same name parent's!, different first name for the mums in Jean and Joan. Go have look at the records sved to Patrick Bruce

snc you will see his parent's are Thomas Bruce b. 1661 Coupar Angus, Angus, Scotland and mother Joan Scobie b. 1665 as well as the baptism record you shared of Elspot/Elizabeth gives same parents. We are going to have to change the parents of Patrick Bruce, Do you agree?

Kind regards Philip

Philip,

I think that it is a 5 and not a three. If it had been a 5 the baptism which follows would have been included under the same date heading (look at the earlier examples) However, I am just about to change it to please you.

Who is the other Patrick Bruce?

Neil

Which Patrick do you want to now about Neil?

Philip.

This is what you said:

"What amazed me is that both these mixed up Patrick Bruce's had the same name parent's!, different first name for the mums in Jean and Joan."

Who are you talking about?

Neil

Neil take the weekend to go over everything and I'll chat to you on Monday.

Kind regards Philip

I should mention that at this period in history, I have seen the names Jean, Joan, Johanna, Johan, Jane, Janet, Jonet, Jennet used interchangeably for the same woman.

Dear Philip,

The lady's name is Jean Scobie. It's not Joan Scobie.

Let me encourage you to look again at the page upon which the baptism of Thomas Bruce was recorded on 23 June 1691. If we follow your reading and say that his mother was Joan Scobie then we would have to read the Robert Clerk (second entry from the top) as Robert Clork.

Similarly, the name of the child named George Alane would read as Georgo Alane (fourth entry from the top). Another example is provided by the entry for Robert Tasker (sixth from the top) which you would render as Robert Taskor. More than this, ever time the word baptized is used we would have to read it as baptizod.

Try reading the pages I have uploaded again. Check the letter e in Jean against all of the other words or names in which the letter e appears.

Sincerely,

Neil

Philip,

The page of the baptismal record on which the baptism of Thomas Bruce (23July 1691) is recorded has a second Bruce baptism (third from top). This records the baptism of Elspeth Bruce (not Elspoth Bruce), who was the daughter of Patrick Bruce, flesher in Coupar Angus, and his wife Agnes Cuthbert (not Agnos Cuthbort). Patrick Bruce was undoubtedly a relation of Thomas Bruce, flesher in Coupar Angus, but I have no evidence for this at present.

I do not think that we need to alter anything.

Sincerely,

Neil

Hi Neil, no look properly they all say Joan.
If you look on the Baptism of Patrick Bruce there are two Bruce's mentioned.

Regards Philip
