Johan Philip Hinkle - Parents

Started by Private User on Tuesday, October 3, 2023

There is much speculation as to the parents of Philip Hinckel/Hinkel/Hinkle but actually nobody knows where he was born nor the names of his parents. Various descendants have picked the first available on-line baptism entry for him and say he was from Frankfurt; others say he was from Rhineland-Palatinate or from Saarland because a ship left from Rotterdam carrying emigrants from there.

I am a Y (paternal) DNA match to Robert Harold Hinkel who was born in Wyoming in 1936.

My first known paternal ancestor was born in the mountains in Saxony, Germany, on the border to Bohemia.

I don't have any other Y matches with my surname, he is the only one.

This may be a pure coincidence i.e. that we both have this surname and are related 1500 years ago before there were surnames.

Realistically, the immigrant Philip Hinkel was probably from Saxony and not from Frankfurt am Main.

I don't believe the parents shown in the Geni tree can be verified as being his parents.

Comments are welcome.

A descendant writes as follows: Philip Hinkel/Hinkle was born in Germany on September 17, 1724, the son of Christian and Anna Elizabeth (Minck?) Hinkle, about whom nothing else is known. He married Maria Catherine (Medlar?) in 1747. They arrived in Philadelphia on September 15, 1749 on the Phoenix, which sailed from Rotterdam, Holland. His second wife was Anna Maria, whose last name is unknown. Philip settled in Windsor Township, in Berks County, Pennsylvania. He appears on a list of people in Berks County who took an oath of allegiance to the newly-founded United States of America and is therefore considered a Revolutionary patriot. The family were members of the Zion Lutheran Church. Philip passed away on October 22, 1793 and is buried in Shoemakerville, Berks County. He and Maria Catherine had the following children. I should note that some researchers have suggested that Anna Elizabeth may have been the mother of some of the younger children, but it seems more likely that Philip married his second wife after the first wife died, and all of his children had been born before then.
