What proof is there that Martha was a Norton? I collected stories from growing up and her granddaughter Sarah Ann Floyd lived during my grandmother's time and talked about her "Grandma Peele." If Martha was a Peele, not a Norton, it might make more sense for the following reasons:

From the profile of Nathan Merrick Minshew, I :

Will of Nathan Minshew recorded 6/August/1818 listed in Sources notes the following children listed in the will:
* Elizabeth Holmes,
* Abigail Nazary,
* Isabel Brackston,
* Lucy? Holmes,
* Patsey Beal,
* Patience Four,
* Sally Edwards,
* Jacob Minshew,
* Nathan Minshew,
* Bryan Minshew,
* Philip Minshew.

Wikipedia note about geography changes with Dobbs County that can affect tracking of descendants: In 1779 the western part of Dobbs County became Wayne County, and the county seat was moved from its original location on Walnut Creek to the town of Kingston, which was renamed Kinston in 1784. Because the name Dobbs reminded the population of the colonial past, in 1791 Dobbs County was divided by the North Carolina legislature into Glasgow County (later renamed Greene County) and Lenoir County, and ceased to exist.

Son of Nathan, Bryant Mincey (Minshew) is listed in another will - that of David Peele alone with "his wife" who is assumed to be David's daughter. Bryant is the executor of the estate.

Now, if Martha Minshew/Mincey is Martha "Patsy" Peele, that would make sense with my grandmother's story. I have never found a source for Norton as her maiden name and I have searched the Norton family extensively as I have a documented line of Nortons from eastern NC/VA.

____________________________________________

DAR records don't seem to have a path for Bryan/Bryant Minshew to Nathan and we know of their connection only through Nathan's will, but that is not unusual. What is interesting is that Bryant's sister Patricia married John Peele, named as a son of David Peele's. So again, is it more likely that Bryan married Martha "Patsy" Peele, than Martha Norton?

If anyone has any information or additional source material, please respond. I think this tree needs some more work.
Thanks.

As for "Patsy"

From Wikipedia -

Patsy is a given name often used as a diminutive of the feminine given name Patricia or sometimes the masculine name Patrick, or occasionally other names containing the syllable "Pat" (such as Cleopatra, Patience, or Patrice). Among Italian Americans, it is often used as a pet name for Pasquale.[1]

In older usage, Patsy was also a nickname for Martha or Matilda, following a common nicknaming pattern of changing an M to a P (such as in Margaret → Meg/Meggy → Peg/Peggy; and Molly → Polly) and adding a feminine suffix.[1][2]

President George Washington called his wife Martha "Patsy" in private correspondence. President Thomas Jefferson's eldest daughter Martha was known by the nickname "Patsy", while his daughter Mary was called "Polly".
