There are several variations to the Berquam name. These include Bergquam, Berguam, Berkvam, and Berekvam. All seem to be related and probably originnated at Ellis Island immigration, early census records or other church or government records.
According to Thomas Berquam, grandson of Olai and Emma Berquam, the original spelling was Berekvam, and means mountain valley in Norwegian. (Personal communication from Thomas Berquam)
