Whitby Plantation, Henrico County, Virginia
Whitby, the old home of the Goode family, stood on the James River, just outside of and down river from Manchester. It was certainly in possession of this family by 1682, when John Goode sold off a portion of "my plantation called Whitby" next to Stoney Creek.
‘Whitby' was an English type dwelling house with dormer windows and brick chimney at each end. The original house, which was used as a Confederate hospital, was destroyed about the end of the Civil War, and was on high ground overlooking the river. The original plantation contained 5,000 acres at one time.
Today, the only trace of the former plantation is a street named for the family. The land itself is now a mine operated by Luck Stone on Deepwater Terminal Road.
