Disputed Parents/Origins

Previously shown on this profile was the claim that Francis Bushnell was born about 1580 at Thatcham, Berkshire, England, the son of Francis Bushnell Sr. (abt.1550-1625) and Margery (Unknown) Bushnell (he has been disconnected from that couple). The source for the information was most likely the Bushnell Family Genealogy.[1] In the same book, G. E. Bushnell asserted that the fourth child of Francis Bushnell (d. 1625) was "Francis, who rem. to Horsham, Sussex Co., and later to America, where he settled in Guilford, Conn."[2]

More recent research by Patricia Metsch, publicly posted in 2007,[3] and material published by Legacy Family History, Inc (LFH) in 2022,[4] both cite the "Parish Register of Thatcham, Berkshire, 1250-1992" showing that Francis was baptised on 15 June 1598.[5] They come to the same conclusion: that if Francis the emigrant was having children as early as 1606, he could not have been the son of Francis (d. 1625) born in 1598, as he would have only been about 8 in 1606.

Metsch proposes that his birth location was probably closer to the place of his marriage, Horsham, in Sussex, than Thatcham. She indicates that Mayfield, Sussex, was about 50 miles closer and had a Bushnell family who were glaziers, as were Francis and his son, John.[6]

Francis Bushnell, of Guilford has been detached as son of Francis Bushnell, of Thatcham & Margery Margaret Bushnell

He’s not the same as Francis Bushnell, 2nd, of Thatcham

If there is evidence otherwise, the parent connection could be restored.

Yeah I can't get anything on ancestry on Charles Bushnell's parents but got baptism record on his wife Mary Edwards daughter of Mary Palgrave And John Edwards. Look like Mary Edwards might had married twice actually also.

Mary Edwards after she passed 1700 look like she might of been brought back to England to get buried May 1700. Not buried in Virginia still researching on the burial.

Private User - I believe you refer to this family:

Charles Bushnell & Mary Cavanaugh Bushnell

Thank you for contributing to them.

Yup trying my best Erica. Been on Brisbins. Also found a interesting connection to a general actually

Yeah there's about two or 3 Mary confused with each other right now figuring which is which. But wish luck on rest of Bushnell's. Records are real scarce on em
