I'd like to see "Acadians of North America" instead.

The term 'of New France' is a little misleading because it wasn't really an effort of the settlers to create a New France, they were getting away from Old France for a new opportunity. The went to a colony founded by Samuel de Champlain.

Here's some background:

What are your thoughts?

I think this makes sense.

Thank you Private User

While I understand your point about a "new opportunity", this is a very focused group of early immigrants and I feel this project needs a more focused identifier than the board term North America. "Acadians of North America" implies all Acadians of North America including those that identify as Acadians still today.

"Acadians of North America" would be a great name for a “Portal” as Erica Howton suggested in an earlier discussion; an umbrella project for this project as well as other projects involving the Acadian peoples from the earliest settlers, to today's Acadians.

Keeping the name simple may be the best way forward with this project. I would love to hear ideas from all collaborators of this project, for an idea for a name.

Acadia
(French site: Acadie)

Colony of Acadia
(French site: Colonie d'Acadie)

Acadia Colonists
(French site: Colons de l'Acadie)

New France and Acadia were two different regions and I agree wtih Ally, saying "Acadians of New France" is misleading (and actually wrong in the context used). If we simplify this for the sake of giving an easy description, New France was Quebec and Acadia was Nova Scotia-NewBrunswick-PEI.

The related projects for a Portal to collect them include:

I would suggest a Portal called

Acadia (with no profiles) to describe the history of the Acadian peoples.

And probably like Acadian Colonists (1604-1713) or similar as the rename

Thank you Everyone!
I like the idea of Colonists of Acadia (for simplicity and ease I am just using the Anglo terms but am not forgetting my roots in any way) and the similar all sounds like great alternatives, and to have a Portal for all these Projects would be fantastic, that way we can see everything in one spot.

This Project in question goes up to the time of the Great Deportation, I think that date should be honoured.

Thanks Martin.

I like it Erica!

Thanks Joel for the Collab request!

I like Colonists of Acadia.

Do we want dates in the project name?

Do we prefer Acadians of North America as the portal name? I would be more oriented.

Fabulous.

I say yes, the Colonists stopped with the Great Deportation.

On the project it begins this way:

"To identify and verify the family histories of Acadians in the northeastern region of North America, particularly before the deportation of the early 18th century.

Please see Wikipedia to explore the scope of Acadia.

First Steps:

Please ONLY add profiles of early French settlers of Acadia and those born in Acadia prior to the end of the expulsion of the Acadians (11 July 1764). "

So, I would like to continue that cut off.
Many had left by then, I've got family that died on the crossing back in 1753.

The Acadians that stayed swore an oath to Britain, so that is where the colony stops for me.

Thoughts?

Thanks everyone! While I was hoping to hear from more of the collaborators of this project, I would be happy to change the name to Colonists of Acadia (French site: Colon de l'Acadie) and I'm doing it now....

I will gladly set up a portal as well under the title: Acadians of North America (French site: Acadiens d'Amérique du Nord

I don't feel it necessary to add dates in the title as that can be defined in the text of the project and using the 11 July 1753 date as the stopping point for profiles to be included.

Joel Scott Cognevich - I’m delighted. Thank you.

Wonderful, thank you Joel Scott Cognevich!

Actually,
My understanding is that Nouvelle France consisted of Acadie, Canada (basically Quebec), Louisiane, etc. prior to the treaty of Utrecht of 1713. Acadie was part of Nouvelle-France 1605-1713.

This Laval University URL refers: https://www.axl.cefan.ulaval.ca/francophonie/Nlle-France-Acadie.htm

I support the revised name of Colonists of Acadia but would rather be a purist and replace Acadia by the proper name Acadie.

Joel - please Colon should be pluralized to Colons.

Merci :)

And a thank you to all who participated and continue to add the the story of our ancestors.

I have now added a portal titled Acadians of North America.
