On the death certificate of one William, his place of birth is given as 'England' not New Norfolk.
Captain William Cracknell's birth or baptism is not recorded, but in applications for his Foreign Going Master's Certificate, he gave his birthday as 5 February 1823 and place as New Norfolk Tasmania. If this is true, then we are dealing with 2 different William Cracknell's.
There is reference to William Cracknell in the 1828 Census of orphans in New Norfolk, aged 4, suggesting a birthdate of 1824. It was suggested that the Cracknell 'orphans", designated as "not an object of Charity'", were such as their father was at sea so often.
