Robert Cleland, who is said to have married Elizabeth Cleland and died at Newberry in South Carolina, USA, in about 1800, is presently identified on the Geni World Tree as the son of Alexander Cleland in Arnbrae, parish of Kilsyth, and his wife Agnes Lang. This conflicts with at least one pedigree published by FamilySearch, which identifies him as the son of Alexander Cleland and his wife Agnes Simpson, and says that he was born in about 1703, at Orange County in Colonial Virginia.

It seems clear that Robert Cleland’s parents, Alexander Cleland and Agnes Simpson, have been confused with Alexander Cleland and Agnes Lang, and as a consequence of this their profiles have been merged in error.
I propose to correct this mistake by disconnecting Robert Cleland from the family tree of Alexander Cleland and Agnes Lang, and reinstating his correct parents, Alexander Cleland and Agnes Simpson. Alternative opinions would be welcomed.
