So Gideon, generally believed to have been born a few years before 1700, died between 1752-1763. In fact, he probably had died before March 1757, when his son sold his 200 acres at Duck Pond, as the seller was not designated “Junior”.
From the 1747 petition (above) we know Gideon, Sr. had at least 7 children who, in all probability, would have been under age at the time. He also had a least a couple of sons who would have reached their majority prior to 1747, and so would not have been included in the count of 7:

  9. A-19 William, b 15 Sep 1743, bp 9 Oct 1743 Prince Frederick Parish Winyaw Church, son of Gideon and Mary Gibson; reportedly d 1785 in TN
  • While it is possible that Gideon, Sr, had a son named Robert, the Robert Gibson of St. Mark's Parish, Craven County was NOT a relative of the Gibsons of Pee Dee. DNA has proved beyong question that the Gibsons of St. Mark's Parish were a different clan altogether and is represented in the Gibson DNA Surname Project as Lineage IV [http://www.worldfamilies.net/surnames/gibson/pats].Two descendants of Robert Gibson (d 1773 St. Mark's Parish, Craven (now Sumter) Co., SC have y-tested. One from the line of Royal Gibson, and one line of Phineas Gibson, they are a perfect 37/37 match with each other, but do not match those in Lineage III [http://www.worldfamilies.net/surnames/gibson/results]..

With regards to Old "Craven County, South Carolina"

If one were to attempt to determine which of the current South Carolina counties are actually situated within the last incarnation of Craven County prior to its elimination in 1769, the best guess would have to include: all of Horry, Georgetown, Williamsburg, Marion, Darlington, Florence, Dillon, Marlboro, Chesterfield, Lee, and Lancaster counties, and parts of Charleston, Berkeley, Clarendon, Sumter, and Kershaw counties.

Keep the above in mind as we move through early SC history. Craven County, SC no longer exists and is NOT the current Craven County, NC.

The will appears to be of Gideon of Georgetown area of Craven as George Johnstone, Esquire is the lawyer. He is one of my connections.

When I get down to Columbia, I will look it up to see how the King faired in the court. In 1770 Georgetown, probably not well.

I will search some more...There is a lot.

I want to know who this "George Gibson" on Catfish Creek, Liberty District, Georgetown District - which is current Marion County. I suspect he is progenitor of the line for George Dexter Gibson that I have been trying to find.
