Sounds like you are selecting “research this person.” That leads to the MyHeritage database.
To search within Geni, use “search people” from the top right.

Here on Geni there's not much free search options, but you can get free access to genealogy research at familysearch.org
You do have to register there to use it but it's the best free research tool online.
And really better than the paid sites since it doesn't serve up prepackaged answers.
