Dear cousins, we have all seen the numerous references to a John Elliott being the father of Richard Elliott. Has anyone uncovered any basis for this?
I have been reading a very interesting 1917 historical text called "Annals of Bath County Virginia" by Oren F. Morton. I've found this to be one of the most comprehensive texts that explains the general settling of the area, with detailed accounts of the first settlers. (Bath County later became Augusta County, and later carved to encompass Montgomery County VA/KY). The text has numerous references to James Stewart/Stuart and Ralph Lafferty, which we know are direct connections to this Richard Elliott (Richard became the brother in law to James Stewart's son, Ralph Stewart, and later served as his bondsman for his second marriage to Mary Clay). Ralph Lafferty was James Stewart's brother in law. These families intermingled for years. The text specifically mentions an Archibald Elliott as being in the same area at the same time as James Stewart and Ralph Lafferty. Undoubtedly there is a connection between Archibald Elliott, James Stewart and Ralph Lafferty. But what? The more I research Archibald Elliott, the more I am starting to wonder if Archibald Elliott is the father of Richard Elliott -- and perhaps John Elliott was a brother (and not father) to Richard Elliott.
The Morton text is readily available on Internet Archive.org and also is on Ancestry and Familysearch. If anyone is interested in looking into this possible connection, I would encourage a read of this text.
