There are some sites (familysearch) which list Alfred's birth as being in Calcutta. The evidence does not stack up. Alfred's parents were in New Zealand in July 1875 and his birth was formally registered at Christchurch - 1875/378. The family had travelled in the east some time earlier but the dates do not fit with a birth in Calcutta.
