She may have been his natural daughter.

Need to check what contemporary historians think. I know Blind Harry’s stories are not necessarily fact.

More historic sources which aren’t necessarily reliable either. I’m looking at Wikitree’s comments:

Sir William Wallace left no legitimate issue, but he left a natural daughter, who is said to have married Sir William Baillie of Hoprig, the progenitor of the Baillies of Lamington.

Citations to document that historians find that wife Marion Braidfoot, {fictional} and daughter daughter Wallace were invented people, and not the wife & child of Sir William Wallace of Elderslie, Kt.

It appears that Hugh Braidfute of Lamington, {fictional} his father FNU Braidfort, {fictional} and wife Wife of Hugh Braidfute of Lamington, {fictional} were invented also, as there were no Braidfute’s living at Lamington in the 13th century.

According to the 15th century poem “The Wallace”, < link >, written by Blind Harry, Wallace carried out the attack in revenge for the killing of his beloved wife by Heselrig.[4][5][6] The identity of Wallace's wife is not known for certain, but her name is believed to be Marion Braidfute. Ed Archer published his findings in 2005 that disputed the existence of Marion Braidfute, as there had been no mention of her prior to a revised rendition of Blind Harry's poem in 1570, believed by Archer to have been commissioned by the Baillies of Lamington, to gain favor with Mary, Queen of Scots by claiming relation to Wallace through their Braidfute lineage.[7] Wikipedia cites:

Here’s a more detailed description.

https://clanwallace.org/cw/wallaces-wife-marion-braidfute-was-inven...

Marion Braidfute, wife of William Wallace, was a fictional character concocted by medieval biographers, a leading historian has claimed. Braidfute, who was supposedly murdered by the Sheriff of Lanark, triggering Wallace’s rebellion against the English, was created more than 200 years after his death to heighten the political standing of a noble family, according to new research.

Since William de Bailleul of Cavers, 1st of Lamington did have a wife, and his son William Baliol, of Hoprig, 2nd of Lamington had a mother, we will continue her profile as daughter Wallace with the “by tradition” name of “daughter Wallace.” She could not have been the “heiress of Lamington” via the Braidfoots, if at all.

She’s been detached as daughter of Marion Braidfoot, {fictional} and Marion’s family marked “fictional.” Marion has been detached as wife of the Guardian of Scotland, William Wallace of Elderslie.

Private User - done.

Hope this helps you with Wikitree also.

Thanks!

Anne Brannen - the link you had posted was the most complete I found. I was taken aback the debunk was not more widely available. Even good sites still have them connected with the “not sure existed” comment.

So, glad we got this done.

Yes. To be quite open about the whole thing, I think that at the point I was putting things together on that profile I was sorta exhausted from something — probably the why have you labeled so many high kings of Ireland fictional, or maybe why am I no longer descended from the sun god — and i did not feel like I could face, at the time, the William Wallace issue.

Don’t get me started on Braveheart. The pinnacle of made up history.
