Max/Mathes seems to be getting into trouble from early on. In 1907 there’s a fight in a 2nd floor tailor shop, Max Greenberg is accused of stabbing another tailor with scissors. I’m not sure from the limited details in the news articles whether this is ‘your’ Max or not. But in 1912 Max and another man are arrested for assaulting a man in a pool hall. This time the article gives an address which matches Etta and family in 1910 so definitely the right man. It’s time consuming (but fascinating) to go through all the newspaper articles, but by June 1921 Max has served time in Leavenworth, been pardoned or granted clemency by President Wilson, been involved in shootings (possible attempts on his life and murders of rival gang members), and escorted to the train to leave for NY.
