The text of Joseph Bowen's will in this entry makes very clear, twice, that several named persons are servants: Dinah, Duck, Harriet Philip Henry (commonly called Ball), Lucy Ellen Jane Francis Henrietta Billy & Georgianna. {Note: lack of punctuation in the Will as set forth in the entry makes it very unclear whether one or more of them goes by 2 given (first) names.)

There is no evidence in the entry to support the representation that Joseph Bowen is the "Father" of any of them or that any is his "Daughter" or "Son".

Sincerely,

B

1.) Encyclopedia of Virginia Biography, Volume IV: Name: William David Bowen, M. D., D. O.: "There are four distinct branches of the family of Bowen to which Dr. William David Bowen, of Richmond, Virginia, belongs, which were founded in America by four brothers who immigrated to this country from their native land, Wales, settling in Pennsylvania, eastern Virginia, Mississippi and Georgia. For one hundred and forty-seven years the Bowen homestead at Long Acre, Washington County, North Carolina, has been in the possession of the family, the old property now owned by Dr. William D. "James Jameson, from Culpeper County, Virginia, was born circa 1820 and graduated from the Virginia Military Institute in 1842. Prior to the Civil War he worked as a teacher, lawyer and farmer. He married Mary Mildred Bowen of Fauquier Co., Virginia in May 1845. They had four children: Alwyn, Harriet (Hallie, to whom the letters are addressed), Ella, and Henry. In 1861 he was elected Captain of Company I, 11th Virginia Infantry Regiment, and was wounded in action at Dranesville in December 1861. He resigned from his unit in April 1863 and was hospitalized as late as September 1863. Jameson was arrested by Federal troops at Culpeper Court House, Virginia on March 26, 1864, as "formerly a Captain in the C. S. A." and was sent to prison at Point Lookout, Maryland. Although he was ultimately exchanged, he did not survive the trip home. He became ill from the effects of his wound and imprisonment while traveling on a flag-of-truce boat to Richmond, and died September 30, 1864--approximately a month after writing the final letter to his daughter. He is buried at his wife's family home, "Belle Coil," Fauquier Co., Virginia. "

I don't have any data on the Mary Mildred Bowen referenced above.

Bowen connection to Chester Co., PA?:"
Very little is known about Moses Bowen and his wife Rebecca Reese. It is generally accepted that they immigrated from Wales about 1698 with a large group of settlers enticed by William Penn. Moses did purchase 10,000 acres of land in Guinnedd Township in Chester County, Pennsylvania. Moses and Rebecca were Quakers. Very probably they had other children besides John but none can be found in the history records. MOSES BOWEN was born about 1650 allegedly in Wales and died shortly before May 20, 1761 in Augusta County, Virginia. He married Rebecca Reese. Issue: JOHN BOWEN, born about 1680, probably in Wales, and died 1769 in Virginia. He married 1720 in Chester County, Virginia to Lily McIlhaney, born about 1705 in Ireland and died 1780 in Virginia. Issue: NANCY BOWEN, born 1732 in Orange County, Virginia and died 1759. She married Archibald Buchanan. AGNES BOWEN, born 1735 and died 1803. She married James McFerrar. Virginia Soldiers of 1776, Vols. I, II & III, page 578 of Vol. 1, Pub. Richmond, Va., 1927 (Compiled and Edited by Louis A. Burgess):
"Bowen Family Note. The Bowen family came from Wales, first to Penn., and later moved to Va. The first of this family, Moses and his wife settled in Penn. Their son, John (married Lily McIlhaney) removed to Va. where there were twelve children born to them, one of who, Capt. John Bowen, was the father of Capt. William Bowen, one of pioneer settlers of Tenn. Captain William Bowen was born in Fincastle Co., Va. and later moved to Augusta Co. As a soldier of the Colonial Army he took part in the campaigns against the Indians in the Shawnee settlements, 1774, being in the battle of Point Pleasant also, fought on Oct. 10th, 1774. The list of Rev. Soldiers, Library Report, 1910-11, gives a number of references of William Bowen, Sr., of Culpepper (sic) Co. and of William Bowen (possibly his son)."

They are NOT listed in the Germanna Foundation database.
Several of these were added by a Bowen descendant via Gedcom and then the Geni user left Geni.
Any assistance is welcome.
If you have info and are unable to add to profile, please send management request.
TIA.

Germanna only lists two children for James William Bowen 1858 - 1918:
1. Lucian Walker Bowen, Sr., b. 15 May 1897, Brandy Station, Culpeper County, Virginia, d. 18 Feb 1970, Washington, D.C. (Age 72 years) [natural] [unknown]
2. Roger William Bowen, b. 1 Apr 1912, Brandy Station, Culpeper County, Virginia, d. 2 Feb 1978, Hyattsville, Prince Georges County, Maryland (Age 65 years) [natural]

But this is modern era and likely the research needs to be for the descendants to add.

Updated.
Stepping off.

James M Bowen
Joseph Bowen and his enslaved girl had several children known and accepted by family. There is a book about them, also featured in the Culpeper Star-Exponent in Fall 2007, "The Truth is the Light When Told in the Dar" by Melanie Cruise, a descendant. Joseph Bowen is brother to my ancestror, James Bowen (whose spouse i Ann Foushee)....these mixed children are not in the Germanna dbase because they have no Germanna ancestry...James married Savilla Nethers whose mother is a Huffman, etc. Later Bowen marriages and collateral lines also have Germanna ancestry but not the children of Joseph Bowen and Harriet Jackson.
