Although there is much controversy about his middle name of Marshall, I have an interesting thought of how it came about. In reading a lot about him, I found one place which noted that he was a Captain with the Virginia Rangers, and a Captain was sometimes referred to as Marshall. Suppose that rather than being called Captain Holladay, he was called Marshall Holladay which over time, he became known as John (,) Marshall Holladay. I'd almost bet on it. Wanda Thomas Flesher
