Karl Ivanovich Zimmerman was born Karl Frederik Zimmerman ca 1809 - probably in St. Petersburg, Russia. No birth/baptismal records found (birth date based on a census record in Latvia). His father was Johann George Zimmerman b. 1778 in Lemsal, Latvia d. 6 Mar 1846 St Petersburg. Using the Russian naming convention of child's first name, and patronymic of the father and then last name - Karl Frederik would have been known in the Russian records as Karl Ivanovich (translation of Johann to Ivan) Zimmerman. Johann George (Ivan Ivanovich) Zimmerman's father was Johann Gottfried (Ivan).
Johann George (Ivan Ivanovich) Zimmerman b. 1778 may have been married two times. The first marriage has not been found. It is believed that Karl Fredrick (Karl Ivanovich) and his twin brother Theodore George were born ca 1809 in St. Peterburg, where their father was General Superintendent, with an unknown wife. Johann George (Ivan Ivanovich) Zimmerman married a 2nd time to Ekaterina Louise Julianova Reils 3 Jan 1810. The theory for two marriages is that Karl Frederick and his twin Theodore George are not mentioned in the request for Nobility that was prepared by his wife Ekaterina ca 1846 after Johann George (Ivan Ivanovich) died. Karl Frederick (Karl Ivanovich) Zimmerman was still living in 1864.
