This is long, but I wanted to have a place a “discussion record” for Elizabeth ‘Betty’ Haynes wife of Jasper Haynes, Sr. and who survived him.

Disputed origins

  • “Wife's name was Elizabeth Powell or Sparks. I have found both names. I chose Sparks. Jasper's land cornered land of Benjamin Powell. Seems logical for his wife to be a Powell.”
  • birth seen as Deptford Township, Gloucester, New Jersey, United States
  • said to be a daughter of Judge John Sparks & Mary Sparks (Parents: Judge John Sparks (1717 - 1802) & Mary Sparks (1721 - 1771, [dates don’t work]
  • daughter of of Robert Powell & Sarah Powell however, evidence is lacking

Wife may have been Elizabeth Powell.

The argument against Sparks is that

  • 1) no proof has been presented, and
  • 2) Jasper Haynes, Jr. married an Elizabeth Sparks. There is some indication that earlier researchers confused Sr. and Jr. and the fact that Sr's wife is known to have been "Betty" (Elizabeth) as was the wife of his son.

The more likely possibility is that she was a Powell. The Powell theory is compelling for the following reasons:

  • 1) Proximity - Jasper purchased his Culpeper/Madison Co. property from Ambrose Powell (High Sheriff of Culpeper for many years) in 1750, and Powell retained and lived on the adjacent land, so it appears that he and a Powell were neighbors until their respective deaths in 1782 and abt. 1788, a period of more than 30 years;
  • 2) Business & Legal Dealings - Powell and his brother, Benjamin, appear on various legal documents relating to land transfers with Jasper (or his son Benjamin), generally in the capacity of common bounds, chain carriers, etc.
  • ; 3) Use of Family Names - Jasper and Betty's children, Stephen and Ann, are recorded as having Powell as their middle names. William Haynes line (William being Jasper's youngest son) carried the Powell name as a middle name for SEVERAL generations with his son, Dr. William Powell Haynes and in the next generation son James' son Maj./Sergeant Robert Powell Haynes. Jasper's sister, Ann Powell Haynes, had a daughter named Ann P. Clark (Powell?) and there was an Ambrose Clark in that family. These facts may not have been known to the earlier researchers who nonetheless saw a possible Powell connection, and it certainly has been a strong tradition in the William Haynes line (to this day) to use maternal surnames as middle names in subsequent generations. If the middle names of all Jasper's children and grandchildren could be determined, the sampling we have suggests that more would prove to be "Powell."
  • 4) Involvement of Powell/Hill Family in Estate Settlement - Jasper's Estate accounting was attested to by a Henry Hill. Col. Henry "Harry" Hill, was married to Ambrose Powell's daughter, Anne Hill. Harry was the grandfather of Gen. A.P. Hill. If Betty was sister to Ambrose, this would make Henry the husband of Jasper and Betty's niece, Anne - an appropriate person to be chosen to handle the estate accounting.
  • 5) Indicia of Common Close Ties to Third Parties - Ambrose Powell was a friend of James Madison Sr. (father of President Madison) and godfather to James Madison Sr's daughter, Elizabeth Madison, born in 1768 (younger sister of the President). William Haynes, born 1763, named his first son, born in 1793, James Madison Haynes. Each generation thereafter had a James Madison Haynes, for a total of four generations. It may be that Jasper was independently connected to the Madison Family or son William may have chosen to name his son in honor of James Madison simply as it was common practice to name children for significant citizens.
