First let me say thank you for finding others of color who are probably my family. We are connected to the European namesake. There is no reason a black man would name his son after a European man unless there was a strong connection. That's a fact.
It was not acceptable to marry a brown person prior to 1865 if you were white? Not just America was racist and color bias. But there were several ways around it. I will name a few...i.e Census takers would tag mulatto instead of negro when they knew one parent was European and most likely for a small fee. When slaves were freed they kept the surnames they were connected to....biologically.
Many brown babies were brought to America from Europe. Just say they were stillborn and quietly bring them to America. Raise them in big houses as 'house servants' never knowing how special they are and on Indian reservations where they blend right in. Perhaps like Sally Hemmings and her half sister Martha, of sorts..or Like my great grandfather Henry Morgan 1845 mulatto
They put mulatto on my step grand mother census Francis Pugh and she black as they come. God rest her soul. But, i dont believe she is the Francis on the census record and my point is those records contain many lies. The only truth is DNA. But those records are all we have to work with to establish a paper lineage.
Disambiguation? Use DNA first before changing what has taken 13 years to research and be prepared to justify any changes other than... sjin color.
Thank you...
