SEARCHING FOR MY PATERNAL GRANDFATHER WHO WAS I BELIEVE INTERRED IN FORT NAPIER

Started by Erika Wiley on Monday, June 24, 2024

Good day

I don't have very much detail on the man at all except that he was interred in the camp during WWI. His name I believe was August Schmidt born between 1890 and 1895. He was from Okahandja in Namibia and I believe returned there after his release. I was told that there was a program whereby "ladies" could knit jerseys for men in the camp and they sometimes attached their names to the jersey along with an address so that person receiving the jersey, if willing, could write back to them. I believe my paternal grandfather received one of these and did write back and after the war went on to marry the lady who sent him the jersey and she became my paternal grandmother. Her name was Martha Emelia Schmidt.
