Christiana seems to be the first person to have the Espenbaum surname.
Does anyone have any information on how this came about?
Could it possibly be to hide his "Swedishness" to prevent being deported
with the other Hiiumaa Swedes in the 1780s.

That could be. One thing that has really puzzled me is why was Pavel Simonsson Buskas allowed to stay on Hiiumaa, while my/our branch, Nils Simonsson Buskas was forced to march to Gammalsvenskby (Zmiivka now) in the Ukraine?
Did Nils strike a deal with the powers that be at the time, or, as you mention, Sven David, try to hide his "Swedishness" by claming that he was Estonian?

Looks like we r related, Sven! I am grandaughter of johannes and Sofia tahves. My name is Helena Wendt. Maiden name meltsas. I'm ene's daughter.
